The sub-series “From the Archives” reprints some of the Liturgy Committee meeting minutes from 1963 to 1969. This sub-series is a behind-the-scenes look at liturgy in Collegeville during and immediately after the Second Vatican Council.

The next record from the Liturgy Committee:

Minutes of the Liturgy Committee

February 25, 1964

Present were Fathers John, Daniel, Godfrey, Michael, Gerard, Aelred, Camillus, Leon, Wenceslaus, Fr. Adam, and Bro. Gerard.

Father John opened the meeting with the announcement that Father Abbot would like a community discussion on the proposed changes in the litany to St. Benedict. Father Abbot also thought that if the bodies of our deceased confreres were placed in the foyer, there would be too much noise coming into the monastery; the widening of the door into the guest parlor might be a better solution, enabling us to bring the body of a deceased confrere into this room. Further, the Abbot’s correspondence with the Abbot President and with Abbot Bede showed signs of new hope for vernacular recitation of the Office.

The remainder of the committee’s discussion centered around the frequency of the Missa Cantata and the reasons underlying the positions for or against it.

Father Camillus said that it seemed the committee’s proposals on the frequency of the Latin High Mass were being disregarded, and he asked if certain people have more influence than the committee does. He wanted to protest very much against the increased frequency of the Latin High Mass. If the latter were to be held every other Sunday, he wanted to examine, within the limits of obedience, the possibility of having a separate student Mass on Sunday.

Father Gerard answered that the Abbot wants to preserve the Latin High Mass, and that students lose their ability to sing the Common in Chant if they sing it only once a month.

In view of this, some members of the committee wondered if this did not further dramatize the unsuitability of Chant. Father Camillus referred to Dom Gregory Murray’s view that Chant is not our idiom.

Many members of the committee felt that Saint John’s has the responsibility of doing a certain amount of development of and experimentation with new forms. Brother Gerard asked whether we should not use simple Chant melodies for English texts more frequently, as Father Gerard did for February 2. Fr. Adam said that it seems that everybody liked the Mass on February 2, whereas after the Latin High Mass last Sunday he heard many adverse remarks.

The question of preserving the Sung Mass was raised by Father Gerard at this point. Father Godfrey said that we must be as frank as possible. We seem to be in danger of a schism at St. John’s, since a minority feels strongly about losing Chant. We must take into account the opinions and feelings of these members of the community. However, we must realize that the normal form of a sung High Mass will be a Mass with all the texts of the people in English. This means, practically speaking, that the normal form of a sung High Mass will be an English High Mass. Since we at St. John’s are blessed with a number of qualified musicians, we should be the leaders in paving the way towards an English High Mass.

Father Gerard said that this reflected a change from sentiments expressed some weeks ago by members of the committee. Father Wenceslaus disagreed. He said that perhaps there have been mutual misunderstandings, but that the goal of the committee has always been the English High Mass. Father Michael added that another false impression that may have been given is that we are against the Schola. This false impression was to a great extent dissipated by Father Aelred’s remarks. He said that in a participated Mass not everybody has to sing everything. An English Gradual could be sung by the Schola. They could also sing the text of the Alleluia, for which a simple refrain could be sung by the entire congregation. For the Introit, simple refrains could be sung by the congregation after the Psalm verses, which would be sung by the Schola. At the Offertory, we could have motets, since this is structurally permissible. The entire congregation, of course, would sing all the common of the Mass in English. Father Godfrey even thought that a Latin motet could be sung at the Offertory.

The pastoral character of the liturgy was stressed by Father Camillus, who stated that the majority of his student body were not artists or musicians who could appreciate Chant. That the liturgy is primarily pastoral and not aesthetic was repeated by Father Aelred. He said that the new Mass will mean a certain aesthetic devaluation, perhaps, but beautiful form, which is not a vehicle of prayerful expression, is meaningless. Father Camillus said that in view of participation on the part of the congregation, the high pitch of the Kyrie must be criticized, as well as the unintelligibility of the reading last Sunday. He also thought that if Father Godfrey’s opinion about the minority is true, we should have a separate Mass for the students.

Father Gerard raised the question about the Latin High Mass here, and Father Camillus stated that Latin High Masses are unmeaningful, unintelligible, unworshipful. Father Leon, who earlier in the meeting had remarked that the liturgical renewal is not to be judged in terms of initial likes or dislikes, asked Father Camillus about the feasibility of sermons to the students on the changes that we have made thus far. Father Camillus did not find such sermons feasible, in view of the changing nature of the student body, with a whole host coming and leaving every year.

Father Godfrey stated at this point that the Latin sung Mass is passé, because the parts which belong to the people are to be in the vernacular; the normal sung Mass, then, will be an English High Mass. Father Michael thought we should have an open community discussion to clarify this and other points. Father Godfrey’s counter-proposal was that this should be stated in a letter on the bulletin board in a positive way first. Father Michael, Gerard, and Wenceslaus were designated to compose such a statement. The committee as a whole also felt that the Abbot should give a public report on his meeting with the Bishop because of the wild reports now circulating about it. The committee also recommended that the Abbot reconsider its previous proposal on the frequency of the Latin High Mass, namely that there should be one every four weeks, so that St. John’s can do its vital part in preparing for the English High Mass.

Father Godfrey [Diekmann] stated that the Latin sung Mass is passé, because the parts which belong to the people are to be in the vernacular; the normal sung Mass, then, will be an English High Mass.
