Pray Tell is running a series on the liturgical history of Collegeville. The sub-series \u201cFrom the Archives\u201d reprints some of the Liturgy Committee meeting minutes from 1963 to 1969. This sub-series is a behind-the-scenes look at liturgy in Collegeville during and immediately after the Second Vatican Council.<\/em><\/p>\n

Nov. 23, 1963<\/p>\n

Present were Fathers John, Daniel, Michael, Gerard, Aelred, Camillus, Wenceslaus, Leon, Fr. Adam, and Bro. Gerard.<\/p>\n

The first matter for discussion was the recitation of the \u201cOur Father\u201d at meals. It was agreed that the heb should intone the \u201cOur Father\u201d in the table-prayers after supper in such a way that the community will pray it silently and there will be no danger of one or two starting to pray it aloud. Proper inflection on the part of the heb should take care of this problem. When the booklet of table-prayers is redone, the question of the proper pauses for the recitation of the Our Father will be taken up.<\/p>\n

Father John raised the question of whether people should be encouraged to make the sign of the Cross during Benediction at the blessing of the monstrance. The committee thought that the sign of the Cross should be encouraged here; among other reasons, we sign ourselves when the celebrant gives the last blessing at Mass, the name of the service, \u201cBenediction,\u201d would seem to imply signing oneself during the blessing of the monstrance, etc.<\/p>\n

Smaller candles had been suggested by the procurator and sacristan for the downstairs chapels because of the expense of the \u201cfollowers\u201d needed for these candles and the difficulty of obtaining them. In view of the aesthetic value of these candles, the committee would want more exact figures on the breakage, etc. of these \u201cfollowers\u201d before discussing the matter further.<\/p>\n

The next question discussed was the direction in which the celebrant should face at the Dominus vobiscum, Orate fratres, and last blessing. It was recommended that the present practice of the celebrant\u2019s turning to face the (majority of the) community be continued.<\/p>\n

The committee backed Father Leon\u2019s suggestion that a better microphone be acquired for the Assumption Chapel, one that would stand on the pulpit.<\/p>\n

Whether the present prayer to St. Benedict recited after Compline should be replaced by the \u201cExcita, Quaesumus, \u2026\u201d and the manner of its recitation were questions reserved for further discussion.<\/p>\n

For Thanksgiving it was suggested that last year\u2019s schedule be observed, but in line with the suggestion formulated last meeting, there should be a \u201cmissa cantata\u201d instead of a Solemn High Mass.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
