Today the choristers of the National Catholic Youth Choir<\/a> arrive at St. John\u2019s Abbey and University for the choir\u2019s 15th season, with Dr. Axel Theimer as conductor<\/a>. The choristers are from CA, FL, GA, IL, MI, MN, ND, OH, OK, SD, TX, and WI. They\u2019re singing at Mass and at Adoration and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament in the abbey this Sunday, then they go on tour<\/a> throughout Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois.<\/p>\n

The theme this year, inspired by Pope Francis, is \u201cCalled to Serve.\u201d As Francis wrote in Evangelii Gaudium<\/em><\/a>, \u201cI prefer a church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lots of great music this year \u2013 the Latin chant antiphon Dominus Iesus, postquam cenavit<\/em> of Holy Thursday foot washing, \u201cThe Lord Jesus, after he dined with his disciples, washed their feet and said to them, \u201cDo you realize what I, your Lord and master, have done for you? I have given you an example, so that you do likewise\u201d; Henrik Botor\u2019s \u201cDeus Caritas Est\u201d; Ronald Nelson\u2019s \u201cYou Hear the Hungry Crying\u201d; Steve Sandberg\u2019s \u201cThis Is My Commandment,\u201d Richard Proulx\u2019s \u201cGod Is Love\u201d based on Ubi Caritas<\/em>, and Proulx\u2019s arrangement of \u201cMake Strong for Service\u201d by Luigi Cherubini. And two pieces by St. John’s alums – “An Instrument of Peace” by former NCYC chorister Caleb Wenzel (SJU ’11) and “Antiphon for St. Martin of Tours” by NCYC camp leader Timothy Dusenbury (SJU SOT ’14).<\/p>\n
