I think it reveals something about a spiritual journey if you name yourself after, say Th\u00e9r\u00e8se de Lisieux rather than Teresa of Avila, or after Mother Teresa rather than Teresa Benedicta a Cruce (aka Edith Stein). \u00a0Yet at the same time, I continue to be puzzled by the phenomenon of choosing a \u201cconfirmation name\u201d in the first place.\u00a0 I happen not to have one \u2013 and that not because I was unable to choose among the many saints I liked.\u00a0 Rather, in my Catholic culture of origin in Europe, we knew nothing of taking a \u201cconfirmation name.\u201d\u00a0 Or, at least that is what I remember.\u00a0 Could it be that candidates for confirmation who may not have had \u201csaintly\u201d first names might have been encouraged to choose a saint\u2019s name before their confirmation?\u00a0 If so, such a choice was certainly not announced in the liturgy itself.\u00a0 Or is this choosing of a confirmation name a peculiar North American phenomenon?\u00a0 Does it happen in Hispanic and African American parishes? \u00a0Where does this custom come from?\u00a0 And does one\u2019s \u201cconfirmation name\u201d actually do any work after the confirmation service (e.g., do people then celebrate their (confirmation) saint\u2019s day in a particular way)?\u00a0 I have many questions related to \u201cconfirmation names.\u201d\u00a0 One thing I am fairly certain of: \u00a0If I had to choose a confirmation name for myself today, it would in all likelihood be \u201cHildegard\u201d \u2013 in which case I would then be named after two women Doctors of the Church <strong><em>and<\/em><\/strong> the Mother of God.\u00a0 Things don\u2019t get much for affirming and confirming than that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During a recent confirmation service I attended, I was struck &#8212; once again &#8212; by the fact that every candidate announced a \u201cconfirmation name\u201d they had chosen.\u00a0 For one, I am always intrigued by the names that come to be chosen.
