{"id":25304,"date":"2014-04-12T12:01:50","date_gmt":"2014-04-12T17:01:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=25304"},"modified":"2014-04-12T12:07:02","modified_gmt":"2014-04-12T17:07:02","slug":"whos-who-at-ccmla-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2014\/04\/12\/whos-who-at-ccmla-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"Who\u2019s Who at CCMLA 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csbsju.edu\/sot\/lifelong-learning-and-events\/collegevilleconferenceccmla\" target=\"_blank\">Collegeville Conference on Music, Liturgy, and the Arts<\/a> (CCMLA) is proud to host an array of keynote speakers, all of whom are specialists in liturgy and music with diverse experiences that allow them to speak to the realities of our changing church.<\/p>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-25307 alignleft\" alt=\"Chris-de-silva large\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Chris-de-silva-large.jpeg\" width=\"130\" height=\"198\" \/>Chris de Silva<\/b> is originally from Singapore and currently lives in Los Angeles, California. He studied Music Composition and Film Scoring at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music. As a liturgical musician, composer, arranger and recording artist, Chris frequently shares his gift of music ministry at national conferences, diocesan and parish retreats around the US, Canada, Europe and Asia. He has served at several faith communities in the Los Angeles Archdiocese and is currently Associate Director of Music and Liturgy at Loyola Marymount University. His experience with multi-cultural and multi-generational worship puts him in a unique position to offer a perspective on stylistic tensions in contemporary worship in his keynote,\u00a0<b><i>Musical issues in contemporary worship: striking a balance between tradition and current styles.<\/i> <\/b>Following his keynote will be a breakout session that aims at putting theories presented in his keynote into practice.<b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25306 alignleft\" alt=\"Alan Hommerding\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Alan-Hommerding.jpg\" width=\"130\" height=\"168\" \/>Alan Hommerding<\/b> is Senior Liturgy Publications Editor at World Library Publications, where he has worked for more than twenty years. He is a published author, hymn text writer, and composer and often presents in workshops on liturgy and music throughout the US. Alan serves on the music advisory\u00a0staff for Chicago&#8217;s archdiocesan Office for Divine Worship and is a past convener of the Liturgical Music Seminar of the North American Academy of Liturgy.\u00a0He is a contributor to the <em>Canterbury Dictionary of Hymnology<\/em>, and his\u00a0articles and reviews have appeared in <em>Pastoral Music<\/em>, <em>Rite<\/em>, <em>Catechumenate<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Ministry and Liturgy<\/em>, <em>The American Organist<\/em>, <em>Choral Journal<\/em>, <em>The Hymn<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Antiphon<\/em>, <em>Celebrate!<\/em> and <em>Christianity and the Arts<\/em>. We are honored to have him share his thoughts on the future of the hymnal in his keynote:\u00a0<b><i>Whither (or wither?) the Hymnal? <\/i><\/b>Alan will also share his expertise in hymnology in a breakout that explores new hymn texts.<\/p>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25312 alignleft\" alt=\"Johan Van Parys (427x640)\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Johan-Van-Parys-427x640.jpg\" width=\"130\" height=\"195\" \/>Johan van Parys<\/b> is a native of Belgium who holds graduate degrees in art history and comparative religious studies from the Catholic University in Louvain, Belgium, and a Ph.D. in theology from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.<\/p>\n<p>He has been Director of Liturgy and the Sacred Arts at The Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis since 1995, a vibrant parish known for its liturgies and support of the sacred arts. Additionally, he is founding member and current Chair of the MN\/ND Chapter of the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums. His book <i>Symbols that Surround Us<\/i> was published in 2012. His latest book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.litpress.org\/Products\/3565\/whats-the-smoke-for.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"><i>What\u2019s the smoke for? And other burning questions about the liturgy<\/i><\/a><i> <\/i>is slated to be released soon by Liturgical Press.<\/p>\n<p>This summer, Johan will draw on his experience at the Basilica and knowledge of sacred arts and share ways to draw people into the church with beautiful liturgy in his keynotes:\u00a0<b><i>Timeless Hospitality. Integrating an ever-changing and multicultural community<\/i><\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b><i>Creating a Place for Worship. Art and Environment for our Times. <\/i><\/b>Johan will also be leading a breakout session focused on practical resources for liturgical art and environment.<\/p>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25308 alignleft\" alt=\"Rita-Ferrone\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Rita-Ferrone.jpg\" width=\"140\" height=\"140\" \/>Rita Ferrone<\/b> is a recognized leader in the U.S. Catholic Church in the field of liturgy. Her work focuses on liturgical renewal and adult initiation (RCIA). She has served in parishes, dioceses, and national settings as a liturgist, teacher, conference speaker, and as a writer of textbooks and resource materials. She holds a Master of Divinity degree from Yale University, and teaches in a summer seminar for congregational leaders at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. She is the author of several books, including a commentary on the liturgy document of Vatican II, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Liturgy-Sacrosanctum-Concilium-Rediscovering-Vatican\/dp\/0809144727\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Liturgy: Sacrosanctum Concilium<\/em><\/a>, for which she won a Catholic Press Association award. She is a contributor to Catholic periodicals such as <em>Commonweal<\/em> and <em>Worship<\/em>, and she has been interviewed in several mainstream media such as <em>The Washington Post<\/em> and <em>CNN<\/em>. Her <em>Commonweal<\/em> article on the Exsultet, &#8220;Virgil and the Vigil,&#8221; won a Best of the Christian Press award from the Associated Church Press. We look forward to hearing her share perspectives on two major changes the church has experienced:\u00a0<b><i>The Future of Vatican II Liturgical Renewal<\/i><\/b> and <b><i>The Vision of Pope Francis for the Church.<\/i><\/b><b> <\/b>Rita will also be hosting a breakout session about online conversations on the liturgy.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"Steven Warner (2)\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Steven-Warner-2.jpg\" width=\"139\" height=\"177\" \/><\/b>Steve Warner<\/b> holds a B.A. in Religious Studies from St. Michael&#8217;s College and an M.A. in\u00a0Liturgical Studies from Notre Dame University. He is an accomplished liturgical musician, composer, arranger and the founder and Director of the Notre Dame Folk Choir. Since he joined the Notre Dame Campus Ministry staff in 1979, the Folk Choir has continued to develop new ritual song on Notre Dame&#8217;s campus and throughout the English-speaking world.\u00a0\u00a0The ensemble has toured extensively throughout the United States and Canada; in 2013, they celebrated 25 years and nearly a quarter of a million miles of journeying, both on the North American continent and to England, Ireland and Scotland. Steve&#8217;s sacred music is published through World Library Publications.\u00a0He was awarded NPM&#8217;s Musician of the Year in 2008 for his contributions to liturgical music. This summer, Steve will share insights drawn from his many years of experience working with young people in campus ministry in relation to Pope Francis\u2019 exhortation to share the joy of the gospel.
