Nothing in Heaven functions as it ought:
\nPeter’s bifocals, blindly sat on, crack;
\nHis gates lurch wide with the cackle of a cock,
\nNot turn with a hush of gold as Milton had thought;
\nGangs of the slaughtered innocents keep huffing
\nThe nimbus off the Venerable Bede
\nLike that of an old dandelion gone to seed;
\nAnd the beatific choir keep breaking up, coughing.
\nBut Hell, sleek Hell, hath no freewheeling part:
\nNone takes his own sweet time, none quickens pace.
\nAsk anyone, “How come you here, poor heart?”\u2014
\nAnd he will slot a quarter through his face.
\nYou’ll hear an instant click, a tear will start
