Comments will not be open on posts in this series, for the very brief summaries given here do not provide, and are not intended to provide, the basis for constructive discussion of the authors\u2019 works. &#8211; awr<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Antiphon: A Journal for Liturgical Renewal, 17:2, 2013.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.liturgysociety.org\/antiphon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antiphon<\/a><\/em> is the journal of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.liturgysociety.org\/antiphon\/\">Society for Catholic Liturgy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>1. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.udayton.edu\/directory\/artssciences\/religiousstudies\/johnston_william.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William H. Johnston<\/a>, associate professor in Religious Studies at University of Dayton, in <strong>\u201cPope Benedict XVI on the Postconciliar Liturgical Reform: An Essay in Interpretation,\u201d<\/strong> argues that Pope Benedict XVI sees the liturgical reform fundamentally positively, more than is generally thought. Johnston acknowledges the many negative things Benedict has written about the reform, including comments very sharp and sweeping in scope. But this must be set against Benedict\u2019s many positive comments, and it is these that provide his fundamental viewpoint. Johnston creatively suggests that the reason for the sharp negativity in some of Benedict\u2019s comments is his sense that his criticisms, which are but a small part of his overall viewpoint, have not been heard and received by others, and so he felt the need to express the concerns every more pointedly.<\/p>\n<p>2. Alcuin Reed, Benedictine monk of the Monast\u00e8re Saint-Beno\u00eet in France and author of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ignatius.com\/Products\/ODL-P\/the-organic-development-of-the-liturgy.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Organic Development of the Liturgy: The Principles of Liturgical Reform and Their Relation to the Twentieth-Century Liturgical Movement Prior to the Second Vatican Council<\/a>, <\/em>for which then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI) <a href=\"http:\/\/ratzingerfanclub.com\/organic_development.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote this review<\/a>, wrote <strong>\u201cFrom Rubrics to <em>Ars Celebrandi<\/em> \u2013 Liturgical Law in the 21st Century.\u201d<\/strong> He notes that many of the great preconciliar rubricists were themselves critical of an obsession with tiny details, for example Fortescue: \u201cYou cannot conceive how I loathe the idea of going into all that horrid business of the <em>minuti\u00e6<\/em> of tomfool modern ceremonies\u2026\u201d The Second Vatican Council gave helpful directives on the renewal of the liturgy and the importance of liturgical law, but the implementation of this was impeded by the cultural upheavals and the spirit of skepticism toward all authority. Reed thinks the \u201chigher way\u201d is to discover the \u201cars celebrandi,\u201d the art of proper celebration. \u201c<em>Ars celebrandi <\/em>is not about liturgical law or rubrics. It is about fidelity to Christ and communion with the One Church He founded,\u201d Reed writes.<\/p>\n<p>3. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pj23.org\/index.cfm?load=person&amp;person=7\">Roland Millare<\/a>, chair of the theology department at Pope John XXIII High School in Katy, Texas and candidate for a licentiate in dogmatic and sacramental theology at the Mundelein Liturgical Institute, wrote <strong>\u201cThe Nominalist Justification for Luther\u2019s Sacramental Theology.\u201d<\/strong> With some nuance and ecumenical sensitivity, Millare nonetheless critiques Luther\u2019s \u201cerroneous views\u201d \u2013 with contemporary Catholic theologians thrown in too \u2013 for their lack of rootedness in thirteenth-century Thomas Aquinas. \u201cA recovery of a Thomistic sacramental theology is much needed as a corrective for the nominalist influence, which distorts the understanding of the sacraments by both Protestant and Catholic scholars,\u201d he writes. Because the issues raised by Millare are so important, <em>Pray Tell<\/em> will publish in the coming a week a careful criticism of his essay.<\/p>\n<p>4.
