{"id":21187,"date":"2013-08-24T13:20:06","date_gmt":"2013-08-24T19:20:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=21187"},"modified":"2013-08-24T13:20:06","modified_gmt":"2013-08-24T19:20:06","slug":"report-on-universa-laus-2013-part-four","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2013\/08\/24\/report-on-universa-laus-2013-part-four\/","title":{"rendered":"Report on Universa Laus 2013: Part Four"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our concluding half-day of work began with Morning Prayer, led by the English-speaking group.\u00a0 After chanting the usual opening dialogue for the Liturgy of the Hours (\u201cO God, come to our aid\u201d\u2026), we sang Paul Inwood\u2019s setting of Psalm 117 yoked with the Trisagion antiphon \u201cHoly is God\u201d in a two part round.\u00a0 The Scripture (1 John 4:9) was proclaimed in English, Moldavian, and Dutch, with the antiphon \u201cHoly is God\u201d repeated after each proclamation.\u00a0 Intercessions followed with the spoken dialogue: \u201cLord in your mercy \/ Hear our prayer,\u201d and after a concluding collect Morning Prayer came to an end with the usual spoken dialogue: \u201cLet us bless the Lord. \/ Thanks be to God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next hour was dedicated to a summary report from two of our members who attempted to collate the various strands of thought that had arisen over the week.\u00a0 They organized these \u201cthoughts and impressions shared\u201d under three headings: 1) Hospitality (\u201cUniversa Laus \/ Universal House\u201d); 2) Training and Growth; 3) Unity in diversity.\u00a0 Touchingly they ended their report with four questions that brought all our work to a theological level: \u201cQui est ce P\u00e8re, qui esp\u00e8re?\u201d (Literally, \u201cWho is that Father who hopes,\u201d but with a beautiful rhyme between \u201cFather\u201d and \u201chopes\u201d suggesting that to give hope is at the core of what it means to be the Father.) \u201cQuel est cet Homme qui pardonne?\u201d (Literally, \u201cWho is that Man who forgives?\u201d but with the same rhyme between \u201cMan\u201d and \u201cforgives,\u201d suggesting that it is of the essence of Christ to effect reconciliation.) \u201cQuel est ce Vent qui invente?\u201d (Literally, \u201cWhat is this Wind that creates?\u201d but with the same rhyme between \u201cWind\u201d and \u201ccreates,\u201d suggesting that it is of the very nature of the Holy Spirit to bring about newness.) \u201cQui est ce Dieu qui se donne?\u201d (Breaking with the rhyme pattern, the final question asks \u201cWho is this God [i.e., Father, Man, Wind] who gives himself?\u201d)\u00a0 Quite the set of questions for liturgical musicians to ponder as they consider the purpose of their music making!<\/p>\n<p>A much-needed coffee break then led to a final general discussion of the future directions that Universa Laus might or should take.\u00a0 Topics of liturgical and musical inculturation came to the fore, as well as the development of analytical tools for engaging and encouraging the production of liturgical music, and a cry from the heart for new topics responsive to the situation in the world and Church fifty years after the Second Vatican Council (i.e., text and music writers experimenting with new ways of ritual prayer).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Our concluding prayer was led by the Italian language group as a bridge to next years meeting in Loreto.\u00a0 After a spoken Sign of the Cross, we heard the Gospel of the Visitation proclaimed in Italian, English, an Eastern European language, and German.\u00a0 We then heard a selection from the commentary of St. Ambrose (of Milan) on this passage from the Gospel of Luke proclaimed in Italian.\u00a0 We rose to sing the Magnificat in Italian, with a melodic antiphon sung before and after the canticle, and the verses of the canticle alternated between soloists and the assembly to a new psalm tone.\u00a0 After a concluding prayer, we sang \u201cCiascun giorno a te, Maria,\u201d a metrical Italian hymn text by Luciano Migliavacca and Gianocarlo Boretti, set to the hymn tune I would identify with the words \u201cDaily, Daily Sing to Mary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If my description of the past week\u2019s gathering has sparked any interest, I would invite <em>Pray Tell<\/em> readers to consider coming to Universa Laus 2014 in Loreto, Italy.\u00a0 The registration cost for the week would be 100 euros, with 60 euros per day for lodging.\u00a0 Loreto is on the main Adriatic train line, easily accessible from Bologna, Pescara or Ancona airports.\u00a0 Please check the <em><a href=\"www.universalaus.org\" target=\"_blank\">Universa Laus<\/a><\/em> website\u00a0 for more information as it becomes available.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I would invite <I>Pray Tell<\/I> readers to consider coming to <I>Universa Laus<\/I> 2014 in Loreto, Italy.
