{"id":20651,"date":"2013-07-15T09:25:11","date_gmt":"2013-07-15T15:25:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=20651"},"modified":"2013-07-19T13:32:49","modified_gmt":"2013-07-19T19:32:49","slug":"inculturation-viewed-from-the-other-side","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2013\/07\/15\/inculturation-viewed-from-the-other-side\/","title":{"rendered":"Inculturation viewed from the other side"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I realize that it&#8217;s beginning to look like I&#8217;m obsessed by the issue of inculturation (well, if one is going to be obsessed by an issue, it&#8217;s not a bad one), but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.com\/virgin-mary-sari-hindus-outraged-christian-statue-depicting-blessed-mother-jesus-indian-tribal-dress\">this article<\/a> concerning Hindu&#8217;s protesting an &#8220;indigenous&#8221; representation of the Virgin and child (hat tip to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/deaconsbench\/2013\/07\/hindus-angered-over-depiction-of-virgin-mary-in-sari\/\">Deacon Greg<\/a>) raises the fascinating issue of the ways in which inculturation and inter-religious dialogue and understanding might sometimes come into conflict.<\/p>\n<p>How do Christian efforts to present the Gospel in a different cultural context look to the members of that culture? In the attempt to present Christianity in the cultural clothing of a non-western culture, do we run the risk of being perceived of co-opting another religion&#8217;s symbolic universe for our own purposes? Particularly in a culture like India&#8217;s, where for most Hindu&#8217;s there is no real difference between &#8220;religion&#8221; and &#8220;culture,&#8221; can we simply borrow aspects of the culture willy nilly without showing disrespect for the integrity of Indian culture and religion?<\/p>\n<p>Worries about inculturation are often couched in terms of compromising the integrity of the Gospel.
