It is difficult to see how the authorized translation of this Collect tallies with its Latin original, or indeed what sense it makes.<\/p>\n

The Latin reads:<\/p>\n

Deus, qui in Filii tui humilitate<\/em>
\niacentem mundum erexisti,<\/em>
\nfidelibus tuis sanctam concede laetitiam,<\/em>
\nut, quos eripuisti a servitute pecccati,<\/em>
\ngaudiis facias perfrui sempiternis.<\/em><\/p>\n

A more literal translation might read:<\/p>\n

God, who in the humiliation of your Son<\/strong>
\nraised up a fallen world,<\/strong>
\ngrant your faithful a holy joy,<\/strong>
\nso that those whom you have wrested from the slavery of sin,<\/strong>
\nyou will cause to enjoy eternal happiness.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The authorized translation is:<\/p>\n

O God, who in the abasement of your Son<\/strong>
\nhave raised up a fallen world,<\/strong>
\nfill your faithful with holy joy,<\/strong>
\nfor on those you have rescued from slavery to sin<\/strong>
\nyou bestow eternal gladness.<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are some obvious problems with the second part of this authorized text. The Latin asks that the consequence of the grace of joy (because of being rescued from slavery to sin) will be the additional grace of eternal happiness. The authorized translation changes this substantially, and makes the eternal gladness a cause, not a consequence of the rescue. It is hard to see how this translation \u2013 or rather, paraphrase – accords with the guidelines of Liturgiam authenticam<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A future revision should consider something like this. I have made a slight paraphrase of the last line to add style:<\/p>\n

O God, who in the humiliation of your Son<\/strong>
\nraised up a fallen world,<\/strong>
\ngrant to your faithful people a holy joy,<\/strong>
\nthat as you have rescued them from the slavery of sin,<\/strong>
\nso you will make them enjoy the fullness<\/strong>
\nof glad rejoicing that will never end.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lastly, on a more frivolous note (but it\u2019s what they heard the priest say), some friends of mine remarked after Mass last Sunday that they were unaware that \u2018Jesus had a basement.\u2019<\/p>\n
