{"id":20372,"date":"2013-06-29T13:30:39","date_gmt":"2013-06-29T19:30:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=20372"},"modified":"2016-11-10T21:48:52","modified_gmt":"2016-11-11T03:48:52","slug":"ban-the-terms-liberal-and-conservative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2013\/06\/29\/ban-the-terms-liberal-and-conservative\/","title":{"rendered":"No more &#8220;liberals&#8221; or &#8220;conservatives&#8221;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jesuit-run <em>American<\/em> magazine is getting some attention for the editorial of its youngish new editor, Matt Malone SJ, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/americamagazine.org\/issue\/pursuing-truth-love\" target=\"_blank\">The mission of &#8216;America&#8217; in a 21st-century church<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/america-a-popular-intellectual-catholic-magazine-bans-terms-liberal-conservative\/2013\/06\/28\/53f9fe6a-df6c-11e2-b2d4-ea6d8f477a01_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">WaPo<\/a>\u00a0picked up right away on this interesting line in the editorial:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The church in the United States must overcome the problem of factionalism. This begins by re-examining our language. America will no longer use the terms \u201cliberal,\u201d \u201cconservative\u201d or \u201cmoderate\u201d when referring to our fellow Catholics in an ecclesiastical context.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Whaddayathink? Should US Catholics avoid the terms &#8220;liberal&#8221; and &#8220;conservative&#8221; and &#8220;moderate&#8221; to refer to each other? Or are the labels helpful? Or necessary at times?<\/p>\n<p>You don&#8217;t have to say in your comment whether you&#8217;re liberal or conservative, though it would help us all know what box to put you in.
