The Prayer over the Offerings for the Sixth Sunday of Easter reads:<\/p>\n

Ascendant ad te, Domine, preces nostrae<\/em>
\ncum oblationibus hostiarum,<\/em>
\nut, tua dignatione mundati,<\/em>
\nsacramentis magnae pietatis aptemur.<\/em>
\nPer Christum \u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

For this, the new text gives:<\/p>\n

May our prayers rise up to you, O Lord,<\/strong>
\ntogether with the sacrificial offerings,<\/strong>
\nso that, purified by your graciousness,<\/strong>
\nwe may be conformed to the mysteries of your mighty love.<\/strong>
\nThrough Christ our Lord.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It seems to be a feature of the current English translation that the aspirational \u2018may\u2019 is often used where the Latin uses an optative subjunctive (I think that\u2019s what it\u2019s called). In English, it would be more correct to say \u2018Let our prayers \u2026\u2019 as the rising of the prayer is more a matter of God\u2019s condescension than our aspiration, important though that is. To my ear, \u2018may\u2019 sounds like a commonplace of motivational speaking!<\/p>\n

The final two lines are opaque. What exactly does \u2018conformed to the mysteries of your mighty love\u2019 mean? The translator has tried to paraphrase the Latin where there seems to be no need to do so. Aren\u2019t we simply asking that God will make us ready to offer and receive the mysteries?<\/p>\n

Dignatio<\/em> denotes something like \u2018gracious kindness.\u2019 \u2018Graciousness\u2019 is not an easy word to speak or hear, as in the 1960\u2019s UK Intercessions response: \u2018Lord, graciously hear us\u2019 which someone once said sounded like a den of vipers hissing. Would \u2018kindness\u2019 not do here?<\/p>\n

Future revisers of the Missal might think in terms like these:<\/p>\n

Let our prayers rise up to you, O Lord,<\/strong>
\ntogether with the sacrificial offerings,<\/strong>
\nso that, being purified by your kindness,<\/strong>
\nwe may be made ready for the sacraments of your great love.<\/strong>
\nThrough Christ \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

Or even this:<\/p>\n

Let our prayers rise up to you, O Lord,<\/strong>
\ntogether with the sacrificial offerings,<\/strong>
\nso that we, being purified by your kindness,<\/strong>
\nmay be made ready to receive<\/strong>
\nthe sacraments of your great love.<\/strong>
\nThrough Christ \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n
