Not sure how significant this is, but the Austrian Bishops\u2019 Conference recently issued a clarification<\/a> on \u201cpro multis,\u201d the words of the supper narrative of the Eucharistic Prayer over the cup (\u201c\u2026for you and for all\/many\u2026\u201d). The Latin words \u201cpro multis\u201d could be translated literally as \u201cfor many,\u201d as Pope Emeritus Benedict called for, but many have argued that it is an idiom which in effect means \u201cfor all,\u201d the translation approved by Pope Paul VI.<\/p>\n

The Austrian bishops have clarified that priests are to continue using \u201cfor all\u201d (\u201cf\u00fcr alle\u201d in German), the older translation still in effect, because the process for changing it to \u201cfor many\u201d (\u201cf\u00fcr viele\u201d) is \u201cnot yet concluded.\u201d<\/p>\n

On April 14, 2012, Pope Emeritus Benedict wrote to the bishops of German-speaking lands informing them that \u201cf\u00fcr viele\u201d must be used in the forthcoming translation of the Roman Missal in German. But there is resistance among the German-speaking bishops. As Cardinal Meisner of Cologne, Germany stated<\/a>, \u201cI have always said that the Congregation for Divine Worship should go through our texts critically and see if we have translated the theological context correctly. But how we express ourselves in German is up to us German bishops.\u201d<\/p>\n

Perhaps the bishops\u2019 statement simply means that priests must not use the new translation until it officially goes into effect. Or does it mean that the German-speaking bishops are still working behind the scenes to keep \u201cf\u00fcr alle\u201d in the forthcoming translation?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
