Editor’s note: Today is the fifth anniversary of the election of Pope Francis on March 13, 2013. Below is a story <\/em>Pray Tell posted 12 days after his election, reporting on the whirlwind of changes at the beginning of his term.<\/em><\/p>\n

*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0*<\/p>\n

Pray Tell <\/em>\u00a0has given extensive coverage to the election of Pope Francis.<\/p>\n

Two Pray Tell <\/em>stories are especially important to get your bearings and make sense of it all:<\/p>\n

\u201cPope Francis, Liturgist<\/a>\u201d by Rita Ferrone and \u201cReading the Language of Papal Clothing<\/a>\u201d by Jonathan Day.<\/p>\n

Anthony Ruff spoke of a liturgical revolution<\/a> over at NCR<\/em>, and then his post on \u201cPope Francis\u2019 Liturgical Revolution<\/a>\u201d quickly got over 100 comments. Consensus seems to be that it\u2019s mostly a revolution in court ceremonial, which of course spills over into the papal liturgy.<\/p>\n

What happened? Court finery was all laid out<\/a> for the new pope. But he rejected the red cape<\/a> for his first public appearance. The rumor that he said \u201cCarnival time is over\u201d seems unlikely. [It seemed unlikely then, but after five years of his off-the-cuff comments, it seems less unlikely now. – Ed.]\u00a0<\/em>But his first impression was a shocker \u2013 noted by Teresa Berger<\/a>, Fritz Bauerschmidt<\/a>, and Anthony Ruff<\/a>. His first Mass with the cardinals<\/a> had a homily that struck Teresa Berger<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The election raised alarms for Latin Mass Fans<\/a>, and CNS reported \u201cdoubts and regrets among some in the Vatican<\/a> about Pope Francis\u2019 \u2018abrupt change in style\u2019.\u201d Even Slate<\/em>, of all places, gave voice to the \u00a0fears of traditionalists<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Francis moved Pope Benedict\u2019s candles<\/a> out of the way, and he doesn\u2019t wear cuff links<\/a>. As cardinal in Argentina he broke church rules by washing women\u2019s feet<\/a> on Holy Thursday. The contrast to Pope Benedict<\/a> was\u00a0noted on Palm Sunday. He asked Argentinians to forego travel expenses to his inauguration and give the money to the poor<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When Pope Francis is in Motion<\/a>, Anthony Ruff plays with what he might be saying to the cardinals. The pope sits in the back row<\/a> before Mass, and doesn\u2019t put \u201cPP\u201d in his signature. He pays his own hotel bill<\/a>. His coat of arms<\/a> is simple and is getting mixed reviews. He doesn\u2019t call himself \u201cpope,\u201d<\/a> and he isn\u2019t using his apostolic palace<\/a>. He likes serious\/folk\/classical Argentinian sacred music<\/a>.<\/p>\n

An amazing early news report \u2013 that Pope Francis was inviting 3,000 poor people<\/a> to Holy Thursday Mass in St Peter\u2019s \u2013 was superseded by another even more amazing report: he is celebrating the Mass at a juvenile prison<\/a>.<\/p>\n

His first approval ratings in the US are high compared to his predecessor at this point \u2013 88%<\/a> and then 94%<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jonathan Day poked fun at Vatican staff who Latinized the tweets<\/a> of the new pope. Pontifex Limerix gave us some limericks<\/a>. The Onion<\/em> was the first to report Pope Francis’s resignation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What all this means for policy is still unknown. We can only guess how he\u2019ll handle the embattled U.S. sisters<\/a>. He didn\u2019t get along well<\/a> with a very traditional new order in Argentina. He reportedly supported gay unions<\/a> in Argentina and said that the Anglican ordinariate for traditionalist Anglicans coming over to Rome is \u201cquite unnecessary<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n
