{"id":18235,"date":"2013-03-13T10:11:00","date_gmt":"2013-03-13T16:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=18235"},"modified":"2013-05-31T15:34:20","modified_gmt":"2013-05-31T21:34:20","slug":"todays-orations-in-the-new-english-missal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2013\/03\/13\/todays-orations-in-the-new-english-missal\/","title":{"rendered":"Today&#8217;s Orations in the New English Missal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>by Alan Griffiths<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two of the orations for Wednesday of the Fourth week of Lent offer \u00a0a little further evidence of poor workmanship on the part of translators and editors of the received English translation of the Missal.<\/p>\n<p>The Collect in the received text reads:<\/p>\n<p>O God, who reward the merits of the just<br \/>\nand offer pardon to sinners who do penance,<br \/>\nhave mercy, we pray, on those who call upon you,<br \/>\nthat the admission of our guilt<br \/>\nmay serve to obtain your pardon for our sins.<br \/>\nThrough our Lord \u2026<\/p>\n<p>The expression \u2018we pray\u2019 in line 3 is not in the Latin text which reads simply <em>tuis supplicibus miserere<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The last two lines, more or less literally, read: \u2018\u2026 that the confession of our guilt may serve to receive pardon of sins\u2019 \u2013 <em>ut reatus nostri confessio indulgentiam valeat percipere delictorum.<\/em> The extant text inserts \u2018<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">your<\/span> pardon for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">our<\/span> sins,\u2019 thus narrowing the scope of the prayer.<\/p>\n<p>A corrected version might read:<\/p>\n<p>O God, who reward the merits of the just<br \/>\nand offer pardon to sinners through penance,<br \/>\nhave mercy on those who call upon you,<br \/>\nthat the confession of our guilt<br \/>\nmay serve to obtain the forgiveness of sins.<br \/>\nThrough our Lord.<\/p>\n<p>The Prayer after Communion in the received text reads:<\/p>\n<p>May your heavenly gifts, O Lord, we pray,<br \/>\nwhich you bestow as a heavenly remedy on your people,<br \/>\nnot bring judgement to those who receive them.<br \/>\nThrough.<\/p>\n<p>This translation reverses the Latin order, so that the prayer concludes on a negative note \u2013judgement &#8211; rather than the Latin ending of \u2018healing.\u2019 Also, the repetition of \u2018heavenly\u2019 in line 2 is not found in the Latin. So why is it in the English?<\/p>\n<p>A corrected version could read:<\/p>\n<p>We pray, O Lord, let not your heavenly gifts<br \/>\nbring judgment on those who receive them,<br \/>\nsince you have provided them as healing for your faithful.<br \/>\nThrough Christ our Lord.<\/p>\n<p>Both these translation errors in themselves might be construed as trivial, but they do interfere with the meaning of the text. More important, it seems from studies of the Missal that such small errors are by no means infrequent.<\/p>\n<p><em>Fr.
