{"id":1817,"date":"2010-05-04T15:15:49","date_gmt":"2010-05-04T20:15:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=1817"},"modified":"2011-06-11T23:37:29","modified_gmt":"2011-06-12T04:37:29","slug":"mass-of-creation-at-25","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2010\/05\/04\/mass-of-creation-at-25\/","title":{"rendered":"Mass of Creation at 25"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GIA Publications <a href=\"http:\/\/www.giamusic.com\/sacred_music\/25th_MassofCreation.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">notes<\/a> that Marty Haugen&#8217;s well-known and widely used &#8220;Mass of Creation&#8221; is now 25 years old. I heard its debut from the composer as an undergrad at our summer music conference (now <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.csbsju.edu\/sot\/events\/CollegevilleConference.htm\" target=\"_blank\">CCMLA<\/a>) at St. John&#8217;s.\u00a0I promptly typeset it on the abbey&#8217;s old music typewriter (this was before computers and Finale) so we could use it at campus ministry student Masses before the published edition arrived. Now we program it at any big liturgy (e.g., university graduation this Sunday) because it&#8217;s the closest thing to a universal setting known by all comers, at least in the Midwest. Sort of a latter day Mass VIII (&#8211;Yes, I know, some of you have mixed feelings about that. Keep your comments respectful, please.) I think it&#8217;s an eminently singable and useable setting which allows people to unite in song, and that&#8217;s a\u00a0good thing. As congregational music it&#8217;s solid enough, though not particularly elegant. I suppose that wasn&#8217;t the goal. I&#8217;ve been somewhat surprised at its popularity, to be honest. I don&#8217;t find\u00a0its G minor in 3\/4 to be\u00a0as appealing as others apparently do. I guess the whole world doesn&#8217;t think like a bookish chant geek monk, or something.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.giamusic.com\/pdf\/MoC_article2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Here<\/a> GIA has put up an article\u00a0on the setting by the composer, including a look into the delicate\u00a0process of revising existing settings for the new text. I think you&#8217;ll find it very interesting.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations, Marty!
