{"id":18088,"date":"2013-03-06T08:54:57","date_gmt":"2013-03-06T14:54:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=18088"},"modified":"2013-05-31T15:47:54","modified_gmt":"2013-05-31T21:47:54","slug":"and-now-for-something-completely-different-illegitimate-prayers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2013\/03\/06\/and-now-for-something-completely-different-illegitimate-prayers\/","title":{"rendered":"And now for something completely different: &#8220;illegitimate&#8221; prayers?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Granted that Catholics\u2019 minds are focused on Rome right now, I have been pondering a broader question for some months. \u00a0And I suddenly realized this morning that my question was not entirely irrelevance to the upcoming conclave.\u00a0 The question I have pondered is whether there are \u201cillegitimate\u201d prayers, what constitutes them, and how to avoid them.\u00a0 Two elements had gone into my thinking &#8212; that is, before the upcoming conclave raised the specter of a whole new set of issues.\u00a0 The first element was an experience at a Mass last Fall, where one of the intercessions was \u201cthat those who have not yet given to our annual fund will do so this week.\u201d\u00a0 I cringed (and probably was not alone).\u00a0 As I reflected on this experience and formed a notion of \u201cillegitimate\u201d (rather than simply plain stupid or inappropriate) prayers, a parable of Jesus came to mind, which provided a second, biblical element for my reflection.\u00a0 In the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, Jesus envisions a Pharisee voicing something akin to an illegitimate prayer: \u201cO God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity\u2026\u201d (Lk 18:11). \u00a0\u00a0Based on these two elements, one might identify illegitimate prayers as in some ways doing violence to the encounter with God at the heart of prayer, either by self-aggrandizing or manipulative words, for starters.\u00a0 I am sure there are other characteristics of illegitimate prayers.\u00a0 I am also sure that as the conclave nears, possibilities for illegitimate prayers abound. \u00a0(I have almost decided to go back to my charismatic practices and pray in tongues until this conclave has concluded).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The question I have pondered is whether there are \u201cillegitimate\u201d prayers, what constitutes them, and how to avoid them.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2},"_wpas_customize_per_network":false},"categories":[12],"tags":[2205,1784,61],"class_list":["post-18088","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-devotions-and-sacramentals","tag-conclave","tag-general-intercessions","tag-prayer"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>And now for something completely different: &quot;illegitimate&quot; prayers?
