{"id":17866,"date":"2013-02-17T08:22:46","date_gmt":"2013-02-17T14:22:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=17866"},"modified":"2013-06-03T16:36:39","modified_gmt":"2013-06-03T22:36:39","slug":"the-prayer-over-the-offerings-for-the-first-sunday-of-lent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2013\/02\/17\/the-prayer-over-the-offerings-for-the-first-sunday-of-lent\/","title":{"rendered":"The Prayer over the Offerings for the First Sunday of Lent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>by Alan Griffiths<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Latin text is:<\/p>\n<p><em>Fac nos, quaesumus, Domine,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>his muneribus offerendis convenienter aptari,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>quibus ipsius venerabilis sacramenti celebramus exordium.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Per Christum ..<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Three questions seem to arise from a consideration of this little prayer:<\/p>\n<p>General: this is a prayer recited after the gifts have been presented, so ought not a translation of the gerundive <em>his muneribus offerendis <\/em>reflect that?<\/p>\n<p>Particular: how should we take <em>convenienter aptari<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>What is the referent of<em> ipsius venerabilis sacramenti<\/em> ? Does it refer to the Eucharist or to Lent or to both? A similar reference is found in the Prayer over the Offerings for Ash Wednesday: <em>Sacrificium quadragesimalis initii<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The Received text (RT) gives us:<\/p>\n<p>Give us the right dispositions, O Lord, we pray,<br \/>\nto make these offerings,<br \/>\nfor with them we celebrate the beginning<br \/>\nof this venerable and sacred time.<br \/>\nThrough Christ our Lord.<\/p>\n<p>In the first line, the Latin does not appear to have the \u2018interiorised\u2019 quality of RT\u2019s \u2018right dispositions.\u2019 It might better be translated as something less specific, like \u2018Make us fit and ready, we pray, O Lord, to offer these gifts\u2019<\/p>\n<p>RT\u2019s expression is opaque. RT\u2019s language is abstruse, its tone markedly \u2018devotional.\u2019 Yet the offering of the gifts is both an exterior and an interior action.<\/p>\n<p>RT takes <em>ipsius venerabilis sacramenti <\/em>as referring to Lent.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder whether a revision of this prayer might take its temporal location (after the presentation of the bread and wine) into account, and also try another approach with <em>his muneribus offerendis convenienter aptari<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p>Make us, we pray, O Lord,<br \/>\nfitting bearers of the gifts presented here,<br \/>\nas with them we celebrate the beginning<br \/>\nof this venerable and sacred season.<br \/>\nThrough Christ our Lord.<\/p>\n<p>Alan Griffiths<\/p>\n<p><em>Fr.
