As some of the readers of Pray Tell<\/em> know I am working on a project of attempting to create a Hymn of the Day inspired by the RC lectionary readings for the OF for the 3 year cycle of Sundays and Solemnities. I am here printing the text that I have created for Advent 3C. Unlike my earlier initiative at this blog, I am not seeking your critique of the text, but am simply offering it for your prayer this weekend. Although it was written in 2009, I find the text surprisingly appropriate in the light of this past week’s events in Newtown.<\/p>\n

A people that in darkness walked
\nYet hoped to find the light anew
\nHeard in John\u2019s words the voice of God
\nAnd cried aloud: \u201cWhat must we do?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat must we do as we await
\nThe coming of the Holy One
\nTo welcome Him for whom we long,
\nTo welcome in God\u2019s kingdom come?\u201d<\/p>\n

John told the crowds: \u201cRenew your hearts;
\nLet those with plenty learn to give.
\nHoard not your clothes, your food, your goods,
\nBut kindly share and simply live.<\/p>\n

Let those who serve the common good
\nTake justice as your guiding thought.
\nDo not extort; do not defraud;
\nTo each their proper share allot.\u201d<\/p>\n

John\u2019s challenge echoes down the years
\nAs other issues come to view,
\nTill we in turn cry out to God,
\n\u201cIn these last days what must we do?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat must we do to heal the wounds
\nOur greed has gouged upon the globe?
\nWhat must we do to house the poor,
\nThe hungry feed, the naked robe?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat must we do to end war\u2019s curse:
\nThe lives extinguished without cause,
\nThe terror stalking innocents,
\nThe harsh perversion of your laws?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat must we do to guarantee
\nA respite from unending strife,
\nSustain a child\u2019s security,
\nAnd cherish those at end of life?\u201d<\/p>\n

With Holy Spirit and with fire
\nBaptize us, God, set us ablaze;
\nTeach us to act what you desire
