{"id":15504,"date":"2012-07-12T07:14:22","date_gmt":"2012-07-12T13:14:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=15504"},"modified":"2012-07-12T07:16:38","modified_gmt":"2012-07-12T13:16:38","slug":"hastening-with-a-loving-heart-on-st-benedicts-feast-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2012\/07\/12\/hastening-with-a-loving-heart-on-st-benedicts-feast-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Hastening with a loving heart on St. Benedict&#8217;s feast day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Benedict-Watanabe.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15507\" title=\"Benedict Watanabe\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Benedict-Watanabe.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"256\" height=\"319\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">St. Benedict, Sadao Watanabe<\/p>\n<p>Kneeling in the back of my favorite abbey church yesterday, I followed in my bright and shiny new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cts-online.org.uk\/acatalog\/Peoples_Missals_Sunday_Missals_and_Daily_Missals.html#aRM06\" target=\"_blank\">CTS Daily Missal<\/a> as the monastery\u2019s abbot chanted the collect of Saint Benedict in Latin:<\/p>\n<p><em>Deus, qui beatum Benedictum abbatem<\/em><br \/> <em>in schola divini servitii praeclarum constituisti magistrum,<\/em><br \/> <em>tribue, quaesumus<\/em><br \/> <em>ut, amori tuo nihil praeponentes,<\/em><br \/> <em>viam mandatorum tuorum dilatato corde curramus.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Imagine my shock, felt the more intensely for being in an abbey church that is the very heart of the Order, upon reading what the English-speaking world is praying today:<\/p>\n<p>O God, who made the Abbot Saint Benedict<br \/> an outstanding master in the school of divine service,<br \/> grant, we pray,<br \/> that, putting nothing before love of you,<br \/> we may hasten with a loving heart<br \/> in the way of your commands.<\/p>\n<p><em>amori tuo nihil praeponentes<\/em>: \u201cputting nothing before love of you\u201d? Really? Does not every English translation of the Rule of Saint Benedict render that text from chapter 4 of the Rule literally: \u201cto prefer nothing to the love of Christ.\u201d Adapted for this prayer, should the text not read \u201cthat, preferring nothing to your love\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a similar way\u201d \u2013 to coin a phrase \u2013 the petition of the prayer is adapted from the end of the Prologue to the Rule: <em>dilatato corde . . . curritur via mandatorum Dei<\/em>: The heart is expanded or enlarged and the monk runs in the way of God\u2019s commandments. <em>Curritur<\/em> is not from the verb <em>festinare <\/em>(\u201cto hasten\u201d), it is, simply and literally, from the verb \u201cto run.\u201d <em>Dilatato<\/em> is not \u201cloving.\u201d <em>Mandatorum<\/em> is \u201ccommandments,\u201d not \u201ccommands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I consulted 2008, the ICEL text canonically approved by the world\u2019s English-speaking bishops before someone \u2013 Vox Clara? the Congregation for Divine Worship? \u2013 took hatchet and pick-axe to it:<\/p>\n<p>O God,<br \/> who established the Abbot Saint Benedict<br \/> as a renowned master in the school of divine service,<br \/> grant, we pray, that we may prefer nothing to your love<br \/> and run with open hearts<br \/> in the way of your commandments.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Benedict-Fra-Angelico.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15508\" title=\"Benedict Fra Angelico\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Benedict-Fra-Angelico.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"305\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">St. Benedict, Fra Angelico<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps someone can clarify: were there not an OSB Abbot and an OSB monk on Vox Clara?
