National Catholic Youth Choir<\/a><\/strong> 2012 was a resounding success. The 2013 season runs June 17 to July 2, 2013<\/strong> \u2013 spread the word to talented young Catholic singers.<\/p>\n

We asked the choristers what music they do and don\u2019t like from this year’s repertoire. Their responses are interesting.<\/p>\n

\u201cSong of Triumph\u201d by Dale Grotenhuis was the favorite piece, hands down. (Here’s<\/a> an excerpt\u00a0from a previous NCYC. The whole thing, with Axel Theimer conducting an adult choir, is here<\/a>.) Choristers say it \u201chas a deeper meaning\u201d and they like the \u201charmonic complexity and dissonance.\u201d It is \u201cvery dramatic and easy to get into\u201d and the \u201cmood is amazing.\u201d One young singer wrote that \u201cit lifted my spirit and made me so thankful to be part of the choir.\u201d One said it \u201ctook my breath away, there was so much beauty in the dissonance and the words.\u201d One wrote that \u201cSong of Triumph moved me every time. To see how it moved the listeners was awesome.\u201d Only one young singer disliked the piece \u2013 \u201cbecause the 2nd tenor part is so difficult\u201d! And there is this profound comment: \u201cI definitely liked \u2018Song of Triumph.\u2019 Why? I dunno. I just do!\u201d<\/p>\n

Running a close second was a piece in a very different style, the jazzy \u201cPraise His Holy Name\u201d by Keith Hampton. (Hear it from a previous NCYC season here<\/a>.) Choristers liked it because it is \u201cmore upbeat and fun,\u201d they \u201clove the beat and the mood it creates.\u201d Singer said \u201cit was fun and I loved how it felt,\u201d and \u201cit brings in this automatic power whenever we sing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s not only \u201cupbeat\u201d music the young singers like. \u201cJubilate Deo<\/a>\u201d by Renaissance composer di Lasso was a big hit, almost as much as the Hampton. One chorister writes, \u201cOlder pieces like that and Palestrina sound great,\u201d another that \u201cI love the old Latin a cappella.\u201d Another wrote that \u201cIt was a Renaissance piece so it was easy to find our place again if we got lost\u201d \u2013 not sure what that means! Another liked the Latin polyphony because \u201cI like slower, emotional choral pieces more than fast ones.\u201d<\/p>\n

Similarly, one chorister liked \u201cHoly God, We Praise Thy Name\u201d\/GROSSER GOTT, \u201cNow Let the Vault of Heaven Resound\u201d\/LASST UNSERFREUEN, and \u201cNew Songs of Celebration Render\u201d\/RENDEZ A DIEU because \u201cthey are such glorious, old, traditional hymns.\u201d Another likes \u201cHoly God\u201d because \u201cI\u2019ve heard it many times before in church.\u201d<\/p>\n

We did Paul Cremona\u2019s catchy \u201cCanticle of Creation\u201d at liturgy and concert, inviting the congregation to sing the appealing refrain. I like the piece and\u00a0am considering including\u00a0it in a future hymnal at the abbey. But some choristers found it \u201ctoo repetitive for my liking\u201d and \u201ctoo congregation-like.\u201d Oh well.<\/p>\n

Choristers are unanimous in their praise of National Catholic Youth Choir: \u201cNCYC caused me to grow more in my musical abilities and faith more than anything else.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s like a new family.\u201d \u201cThis is my favorite camp I\u2019ve ever been to.\u201d \u201cNCYC is the best thing ever to happen to me.\u201d \u201cI love that we all have two common important interests, our faith and singing.\u201d<\/p>\n

And in their praise of the conductor, Dr. Axel Theimer: \u201cDr. T is an amazing director. He knows what he\u2019s talking about.\u201d \u201cHe is a brilliant mentor.\u201d \u201cHe was focused but fun, too.\u201d \u201cHe never made anyone feel bad about mistakes.\u201d \u201cDr. T has changed my life.\u201d \u201cHe\u2019s the best teacher I\u2019ve ever had.\u201d \u201cHis teaching made me so excited about religious music. I can\u2019t wait to take back everything I\u2019ve learned.\u201d<\/p>\n

Next year the NCYC camp runs June 17 to July 2, 2013 \u2013 do spread the word.<\/p>\n
