{"id":14995,"date":"2012-06-03T12:06:01","date_gmt":"2012-06-03T18:06:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=14995"},"modified":"2013-06-09T20:57:24","modified_gmt":"2013-06-10T02:57:24","slug":"priests-organizing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2012\/06\/03\/priests-organizing\/","title":{"rendered":"Priests organizing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The phenomenon of Catholic clergymen organizing themselves is spreading from Austria and Ireland to the US and to England and Wales.<\/p>\n<p>In the US, the newly-founded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uscatholicpriests.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Association of U.S. Catholic Priests<\/a> is up to over 650 members. Its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uscatholicpriests.org\/assembly\/\" target=\"_blank\">inaugural assembly<\/a> on June 11-14 has keynote speakers Richard Gaillardetz on \u201cThe Historical Impact of Vatican II on the American Church and Priesthood,\u201d and Fr. Anthony Ruff, OSB, on \u201cThe New Roman Missal: What is the Problem, and What Can We Do about It?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In England and Wales, six priests who claim the support of over 30 priests recently wrote a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetablet.co.uk\/issue\/1000312\/letters\" target=\"_blank\">letter to <em>The Tablet<\/em><\/a> expressing deep concern about the direction of the church. They call for better dialogue between the hierarchy and laity, a theology of sexuality \u201crooted in the actual experiences of the faithful\u201d and a discussion on ordaining married men as priests. They criticize the Roman Curia for bypassing basic teaching of the Second Vatican Council such as collegiality. \u201cThe recent imposition of the new translation of the Mass texts is an obvious example of this,\u201d they said. They invite supportive priests to contact them.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pfarrer-initiative.at\/\">Pfarrer Initiative<\/a> in Austria has \u00a0approximately 475 members and supporters among the clergy. It has attracted attention for its \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2011\/06\/29\/austrian-priests-call-for-disobedience-the-bishop-disagrees\/\" target=\"_blank\">Appeal to Disobedience<\/a>\u201d which calls for far-reaching reforms, and implements some of them with or without approval. (See also <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2011\/11\/07\/austrian-priests-support-the-appeal-to-disobedience-by-a-wide-margin\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.associationofcatholicpriests.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\">Association of Catholic Priests<\/a> in Ireland has over 850 members.
