In a word, it is splendid, one of the best plays I have seen in years. <\/p>\nI went last night, in distinguished company — Chris Grady, another Pray Tell<\/em> participant, was there as well as the Archbishop of Canterbury. The author, director and cast presented a Q&A after the play, so we were at the theatre until 11 pm.<\/p>\nIt was as if our Pray Tell<\/em> discussions were being played out before us: for example, the King James translators deliberately chose language that was archaic for its time, a contentious decision on their part. Here is a very brief excerpt, dialogue between William Tyndale and Lancelot Andrewes:<\/p>\nTYNDALE. When you say \u2018truly\u2019, \u2018clearly\u2019, \u2018evidently\u2019. And \u2018the breath thereof\u2019 when you would \u2013 clearly \u2013 say \u2018its breath\u2019, as you say \u2018its author\u2019? Why translate into an ancient tongue?<\/p>\n
