{"id":14368,"date":"2012-04-30T06:50:36","date_gmt":"2012-04-30T12:50:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=14368"},"modified":"2012-05-02T23:37:15","modified_gmt":"2012-05-03T05:37:15","slug":"the-bunny-scandal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2012\/04\/30\/the-bunny-scandal\/","title":{"rendered":"The Bunny Scandal (UPDATED)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, it had to show up here eventually: the video of the Easter Sunday Mass in Hartsberg, Austria, featuring <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7P9qrQpEBu0\">the Easter Bunny leading the Prayer of the Faithful<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To perhaps give a fuller picture of what else is going on in this parish, here is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jcb7vArZbUA\">a clip from their Easter Vigil.<\/a>\u00a0Aside from the fact that they left the lights off during the Exultet, I don&#8217;t see anything here that would scare the horses of the Knights of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s been plenty of apoplexy over the first video, so maybe here we can try for some analysis.<\/p>\n<p>So was the Bunny leading the prayer of the faithful simply an (unfortunate?) attempt at inculturation? Given that it was the family Mass, was it a (pandering?) way of trying to reach the children?<\/p>\n<p>If we think this was a bad idea (OK, I&#8217;ll admit it: I think it was a terrible idea), how would one go about explaining why it is bad, other than chanting &#8220;say the black; do the red&#8221; (in fact, I don&#8217;t think there&#8217;s anything in the red <em>forbidding<\/em>\u00a0the Easter Bunny from leading the Prayer of the Faithful)?<\/p>\n<p>If we think it was a good idea, how would we justify it on liturgical\/theological grounds &#8212; i.e. in some way other than saying how cute people thought it was?<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE\/CORRECTION: Perusing the parish website (thanks to Brigid for the link) I see that the children&#8217;s Mass was on Easter Monday, not Easter Sunday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, it had to show up here eventually.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":38,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[14,285,33],"tags":[271,1997],"class_list":["post-14368","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-inculturation","category-pastoral-theology","category-youth","tag-austria","tag-easter-bunny"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
