{"id":14063,"date":"2012-04-12T05:22:01","date_gmt":"2012-04-12T11:22:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=14063"},"modified":"2012-04-18T09:20:12","modified_gmt":"2012-04-18T15:20:12","slug":"penance-and-the-new-evangelization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2012\/04\/12\/penance-and-the-new-evangelization\/","title":{"rendered":"Penance and the New Evangelization"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThe new evangelization begins \u2026 in the confessional!\u201d Pope Benedict said to a group of 1,000 clergy gathered for a conference on the sacrament of Penance, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adoremus.org\/0412BenedictXVI_NewEvangelization.html\" target=\"_blank\">Adoremus Bulletin reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Without discounting the evangelizing potential of what transpires in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, this seemed, on the face of it, a strange claim to make. Does Pope Benedict envision great numbers of un-evangelized Catholics going to confession?<\/p>\n<p>Upon reading further, however, the following statement suggested a different insight: \u201cThe Sacraments and the proclamation of the Word, in fact, must never be conceived as separate\u201d the Pope said. The proclamation of the Word in the sacrament of Penance seems to have been his focus.<\/p>\n<p>Is the Word proclaimed well &#8220;in the confessional&#8221;?
