Here is a passage from Catherine de Vinck\u2019s A Passion Play: A Drama for Several Voices<\/em> (Allendale, NJ: Alleluia Press, 1975) that I thought would be especially enriching for our celebration of Easter Sunday. It conflates a series of speeches the Risen Jesus makes to various disciples:<\/p>\n

Peace be to you
\nmy brothers, my sisters!
\nHow often did I ask:
\ndo you believe? And you said yes
\nbut it was only a nodding of the head?
\nAnd now I come again:
\ndo you believe, can you see
\nI am walking through the clouds of your eyes
\nI your Lord risen from the dead?
\nNo, I am not a ghost: touch me
\nfeel me. Does a ghost have real flesh
\nskin over webbing of muscle and bones?<\/p>\n

The sun shines in your faces:
\ndo you still need to fumble
\nwith oil and lamp? Had I not died,
\ncould I claim to be your brother
\ncould I share time with you
\nthe ancient rhythm of the clock?
\nIf death had rubbed me fine as sand
\ncould I now call you back, could I say:
\nI am the Christ, I am the Lord walking
\nthe divided roads of history
\nfeeling in my bones
\nthe heaving of continents?
\nSince the beginning, I shape the world
\nand in the shaping I am cast: flesh, hair
\neye and hand, helter-skelter
\nfor I am son of man as well as son of God.
\nYes, I have seen the earth ravaged
\nthe worm at work in the wound;
\nI have seen children with bellies
\nlike wrinkled gourds, women weeping
\nmen carved thin by the chisel of pain.
\nEverywhere
\ndeath was the talk of the town. No more!
\nDeath is that deflated pouch, that bag
\nof toothless snakes.
\nThey still lift hissing heads to your ankles
