The narrator\u2019s monologue here sets the scene for Jesus\u2019 crucifixion:<\/p>\n

There is a season for everything under the heavens:
\na time for being born
\na time for dying
\na time for weeping
\na time for healing
\na time for blowing on the fire
\na time for wetting the hot coals
\na time for day and a time for night.
\nThe sun breaks in two like an apple:
\ndark is the flesh, cored and crushed
\ndark are the seeds.
\nThe moon rolls out of its path
\nshatters in crystal slivers;
\nstar after star is tilted
\ndrained of light.
\nDestruction, desolation, ruin:
\nthe nest is pilfered, the fledgelings
\n— those little ones gathered under the wing \u2013
\ndie frozen in foreign lands. God
\nwhy hast thou forsaken us?
\nThe tree drips with sap. In the empty air
\nour tears harden into cutting diamonds:
\nthey write deep into this hour
\ncarve the letters of his holy name.
\nLike wine, he is poured
\nlike grained, he is threshed:
\none measure of blood, one of flesh
\none body lying at the crossroads of time
