Here is a passage from Catherine de Vinck\u2019s A Passion Play: A Drama for Several Voices<\/em> (Allendale, NJ: Alleluia Press, 1975) that I thought would be especially enriching for our celebration of Good Friday. This monologue represents Jesus\u2019 encounter with the women of Jerusalem on his way to crucifixion:<\/p>\n

Women of Jerusalem
\ndo not weep over me:
\nbut if tears must fall, let them flow
\nover yourselves, over your children.
\nAnd if you must wail, let your voices
\nrise beyond this hour and break a passage
\nthrough the hard stone of time.
\nI mourn with you, my sisters:
\nhate fans the fire under the cauldron
\nwhere you simmer. Why, queens of sorrow
\ndoes your hair blaze under flaming crowns?
\nFrom age to age
\nwhy is guilt pressed upon your souls?
\nCrush the myrrh, prepare the linen
\nstore the ointment for your distant children.
\nThe desert, the rock-pile, the lime-pit
\nthis is where you keep house, my sisters!
\nWith you I mourn, with you I am sent
\nby cattle-car to sealed rooms
\ndeep into a smoky darkness.
\nMy sisters, in my dying I sing Kaddish with you.
\nI am not a God of nowhere, but Myriam\u2019s son;
