I\u2019d like to share some excerpts from this poetic drama to enrich the experience of those of us entering into the celebration of Triduum. Here, for Holy Thursday, is the Narrator\u2019s monologue as Jesus and the disciples enter and take their places at the table:<\/p>\n<p>In the beginning was the beast:<br \/>\nsacred, swift life to track<br \/>\ntrap, pierce with magic tools<br \/>\n&#8212; flint, arrow, obsidian knife.<br \/>\nThe blood of the wilderness flows.<br \/>\nAround campfires, the hunters gather<br \/>\nroasting the meat, eating with filed teeth<br \/>\ngreat chunks of earth and sky.<br \/>\nWe have seen the man with bird-beak<br \/>\nand lion-claw, the woman with the owl-head<br \/>\ndraped in the owl\u2019s wings. We have passed<br \/>\ndancing from one stage to the next<br \/>\nhauling our weight, our pots, our water-jars<br \/>\nstep after stony step, shedding centuries<br \/>\nlike breast-feathers or scales<br \/>\nbecoming what we are: men in an upper-room<br \/>\nvisited by the God we expected<br \/>\nfrom millennia to millennia<br \/>\nfrom meal to meal.<br \/>\nWe have come<br \/>\nfrom the middle and far distance<br \/>\nto eat that one real body<br \/>\nto collect in the ancient cup<br \/>\nthat one real blood.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have just completed teaching a unit in my \u201cCatholic Vision\u201d course in which my students and I read Catherine de Vinck\u2019s <I>A Passion Play: A Drama for Several Voices<\/I>.
