Like this: \u201cLamb of God,\u201d \u201cSon of God,\u201d \u201cLord of love,\u201d \u201cBread of life,\u201d and the like; and then the last time the return to \u201cLamb of God\u201d to signal the final ending, \u201cgrant us peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Pray Tell<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2011\/05\/18\/lamb-of-god-son-of-god-not\/\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> earlier that official moods are moving toward opposing such tropes. According to the ascendant view, only the text \u201cLamb of God\u201d (\u201cAgnus Dei\u201d) should be used each time if the chant is extended. This led to our solution at St. John\u2019s last Pentecost \u2013 to sing the approved text <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2011\/06\/09\/agnus-dei-tropes-for-pentecost\/\" target=\"_blank\">in many languages<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since that earlier report, I\u2019ve found out that the USCCB hasn\u2019t officially ruled on the matter, but has expressed its considered opinion in response to an inquiry. The permission for tropes in the US bishops\u2019 document <em>Sing to the Lord, <\/em>then, still stands. In recently published worship aids, though, publishers are avoiding such tropes, I believe at the request of the USCCB.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Alan Hommerding has convinced me that \u201cLamb of God\u201d is a highly appropriate text for this moment, and one should hesitate to replace it with something which diminishes the paschal sacrificial banquet theme.<\/p>\n<p>Putting all this together \u2013 Agnus Dei tropes are permitted but frowned upon, \u201cLamb\u201d is the right theme for this ritual moment \u2013 I\u2019ve decided to abandon the use of seasonal tropes for the Agnus Dei, but use the same tropes year-round. They have exclusively lamb\/sacrifice themes.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the tropes used for Latin chant settings <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Agnus-congregational-layout.pdf\">in congregational layout<\/a>. Here is the <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Agnus-Dei-Latin-tropes-cantor.pdf\">cantor part<\/a>. Here is Agnus XVIII for <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Agnus-Dei-Latin-tropes-Schola-organum.pdf\">schola with organum<\/a>. I set it up so that each trope is one syllable longer, which both helps build momentum and makes it clearer when the Agnus Dei returns.
