When marketplace desires
\nCrouched \u2018round the Temple\u2019s stones
\nAnd enterprise seduced
\nHearts meant for God alone,
\nChrist stands against these pow\u2019rs,
\nAnd zealously he grieves:
\n\u201cMy Father\u2019s house shall not
\nBe made a den of thieves.\u201d<\/p>\n
Built up by human hands \u2013
\nThe wonder of its age \u2013
\nThe Temple fell to ruin,
\nDestroyed by Roman rage.
\nBetrayed by human guile,
\nCondemned by priest and state,
\nChrist stands, unconquered still
\nBy death and sin and hate.<\/p>\n
Some find in reason\u2019s sway
\nTheir only certainty.
\nSome chase elusive signs,
\nObscure divinity.
\nWe see our God enfleshed,
\nEternity entimed,
\nIn Jesus, Son of God,
\nThe living Crucified.<\/p>\n
The foolishness of God
\nSurpasses human thought;
\nThe weakness of our God
\nUnweaves what power wrought.
\nO God of paradox,
\nFulfill your great design:
