I see over at WDTPRS that Fr. Zuhlsdorf finally has an opinion<\/a> on something – namely, the newly-translated collect for Holy Innocents:<\/p>\n

Deus, cuius hodierna die praeconium
\nInnocentes Martyres non loquendo,
\nsed moriendo confessi sunt:
\nda, quaesumus, ut fidem tuam,
\nquam lingua nostra loquitur
\netiam moribus vita fateatur.<\/em><\/p>\n

Can you spell \u201cbowdlerize\u201d?<\/p>\n

LITERAL VERSION<\/strong>:
\nO God, whose public heralding the Innocent Martyrs
\nprofessed this very day not by speaking but by dying;
\ngrant, we implore, that (our) life might confess Your Faith,
\nwhich we speak with our tongue,
\nalso by (our) morals.<\/p>\n

NEW CORRECTED VERSION<\/strong>:
\nO God, whom the Holy Innocents confessed
\nand proclaimed on this day,
\nnot by speaking but by dying,
\ngrant, we pray,
\nthat the faith in you which we confess with our lips
\nmay also speak through our manner of life<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Did the translator not get that fateor<\/em> is deponent? The subject is vita<\/em>, no? Accusative fidem<\/em> is the object, not the subject.<\/p>\n

What a mess.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A bit of back story: the “bowlderize” line is a swipe at the revisions made to Latin missal prayers after Vatican II. Someone who has written on that topic is Lauren Pristas – I believe in The Thomist<\/em>, maybe also in Antiphon<\/em>.<\/p>\n

And here (Fr. Z. doesn’t give this) is the translation produced by ICEL and the bishops, and then approved by the bishops for submission to Rome:<\/p>\n

O God, whom on this day the Innocent Martyrs proclaimed and confessed
\nnot by speaking but by dying,
\ngrant, we pray,
\nthat we may profess your faith
\nnot only with our lips but also with our lives.
\nThrough our Lord . . .<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
