In the previous translation, this was cleverly moved to the end of the prayer: \u201c<em>We ask this<\/em> through our Lord Jesus Christ\u2026\u201d to make a complete sentence out of what would otherwise be \u201cThrough Christ our Lord\u2026\u201d (I\u2019m not sure it\u2019s a grammatical error, BTW, that this isn\u2019t a complete sentence now. Liturgical diction has its own patterns. But that\u2019s another question for another day.) Now the <em>qu\u00e6sumus<\/em> is back in the middle of the prayer in our English missal, as in the Latin.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what I\u2019m asking. Why did Vox Clara and\/or the Congregation for Divine Worship in Rome so often get the <em>qu\u00e6sumus<\/em> wrong in the English? Or more precisely, why did they <strong>change<\/strong> it to make it wrong (according to their rules), when a correct (according to their rules) translation had been submitted by the bishops\u2019 conferences?<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s Prayer after Communion, for example, has this:<\/p>\n<p>As we give thanks, almighty God,<br \/>\nfor these gifts you have bestowed,<br \/>\ngraciously arouse in us, <strong>we pray<\/strong>,<br \/>\nthe desire for those yet to come, \u2026<\/p>\n<p>which is a translation of this:<\/p>\n<p><em>Gratias de collatis muneribus referentes,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>fac nobis propitius, omnipotens Deus,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>quae ventura sunt desiderare praestanda, \u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yup. That\u2019s right. There\u2019s no <em>qu\u00e6sumus<\/em> in Latin. But someone added a \u201cwe pray\u201d to the English. Why?? Was someone so taken with <em>qu\u00e6sumus<\/em>-fever that he (I\u2019m pretty sure that\u2019s the right pronoun here) couldn\u2019t resist? Is there some new principle according to which the Latin original, when it isn\u2019t sufficiently Latinate, is to be made more Latinate in the vernacular version?<\/p>\n<p>FWIW, the bishops and ICEL had gotten it right:<\/p>\n<p>As we give thanks, almighty God,<br \/>\nfor the gifts you have bestowed,<br \/>\ngraciously stir in us the desire for blessings yet to come, \u2026<\/p>\n<p>The same thing happened to the Collect last Tuesday:<\/p>\n<p>\u2026look kindly, <strong>we pray<\/strong>,<br \/>\non the handiwork of your mercy, \u2026<\/p>\n<p>where the Latin has<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 in opera misericordiae tuae propitius intuere, \u2026<\/p>\n<p>and the bishops and ICEL (right again) had the following:<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 look kindly on the handiwork of your mercy, \u2026<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll get more questionable quantity of <em>qu\u00e6sumus<\/em> on December 30:<\/p>\n<p>O God, who touch us through our partaking of your Sacrament,<br \/>\nwork, <strong>we pray<\/strong>, the effects of its power in our hearts, \u2026<\/p>\n<p>for this:<\/p>\n<p>Deus, qui nos sacramenti tui participatione contingis,<br \/>\nvirtutis eius effectus in nostris cordibus operare, ..<\/p>\n<p>And whaddayaknow, the bishps and ICEL got it right again:<\/p>\n<p>O God, who touch us through our partaking of your Sacrament,<br \/>\nwork the effects of its power in our hearts, \u2026<\/p>\n<p>But it goes the other way too. Here are three cases season of <em>qu\u00e6sumus<\/em>-cutback in our translation, though ICEL and the bishops had carefully translated it from the Latin.<\/p>\n<p>First, the Prayer over the Offerings for the Vigil of the Nativity:<\/p>\n<p>Current missal:<\/p>\n<p>As we look forward, O Lord,<br \/>\nto the coming festivities,<br \/>\nmay we serve you all the more eagerly<br \/>\nfor knowing that in them<br \/>\nyou make manifest the beginnings of our redemption.<\/p>\n<p>Latin:<\/p>\n<p>Tanto nos, Domine, <strong>qu\u00e6sumus<\/strong>,<br \/>\npromptiore servitio haec praecurrere concede sollemnia,<br \/>\nquanto in his constare principium<br \/>\nnostrae redemptionis ostendis.<\/p>\n<p>ICEL\/bishops\u2019 conferences:<\/p>\n<p>Grant us, Lord, <strong>we pray<\/strong>,<br \/>\nthat as we welcome this festive season,<br \/>\nwe may serve you all the more eagerly<br \/>\nfor knowing that you reveal therein<br \/>\nthe beginning of our redemption.<\/p>\n<p>Then, on December 31st (perhaps balancing out the uncalled-for <em>qu\u00e6sumus <\/em>of the day before?), we\u2019ll get this in the Prayer over the Offerings:<\/p>\n<p>O God, who give us the gift of true prayer and of peace,<br \/>\ngraciously grant that, through this offering,<br \/>\nwe may do fitting homage to your divine majesty<br \/>\nand by partaking of the sacred mystery,<br \/>\nwe may be faithfully united in mind and heart.<\/p>\n<p>The Latin:<\/p>\n<p>Deus, auctor sincerae devotionis et pacis,<br \/>\nda, <strong>qu\u00e6sumus<\/strong>, ut et maiestatem tuam<br \/>\nconvenienter hoc munere veneremur,<br \/>\net sacri participatione mysterii fideliter sensibus uniamur.<\/p>\n<p>And the ICEL\/bishops\u2019 version:<\/p>\n<p>O God, author of true devotion and peace,<br \/>\ngrant, <strong>we pray<\/strong>, that with this gift<br \/>\nwe may offer due homage to your divine majesty<br \/>\nand, by partaking of the sacred mystery,<br \/>\nwe may be faithfully united in mind and heart.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, for the Prayer after Communion on Epiphany, Mass during the Day, the missal has:<\/p>\n<p>Go before us with heavenly light, O Lord,<br \/>\nalways and everywhere,<br \/>\nthat we may perceive with clear sight<br \/>\nand revere with true affection<br \/>\nthe mystery in which you have willed us to participate.<\/p>\n<p>Latin:<\/p>\n<p>Caelesti lumine, <strong>qu\u00e6sumus<\/strong>, Domine,<br \/>\nsemper et ubique nos praeveni,<br \/>\nut mysterium, cuius nos participes esse voluisti,<br \/>\net puro cernamus intuitu, et digno percipiamus affectu.<\/p>\n<p>ICEL\/bishops:<\/p>\n<p>With heavenly light<br \/>\ngo before us always and everywhere,<br \/>\n<strong>we pray<\/strong>, O Lord,<br \/>\nthat we may discern with clear vision<br \/>\nand regard with due tenderness<br \/>\nthe mystery you have willed us to share.<\/p>\n<p>Now look, before anyone gets all worked up about this, let\u2019s take a breath and put it all in perspective. Strange as these mistakes are, I don\u2019t think they really matter much. The negative effect of such minutiae on our liturgical life is pretty close to zilch.<\/p>\n<p>Much more pressing is whether every Latin <em>qu\u00e6sumus<\/em> should be translated as an insertion in the middle of an English phrase (I\u2019m skeptical), or whether <em>Liturgiam authenticam\u2019s<\/em> demand to imitate Latin syntax works (I\u2019m convinced it doesn\u2019t). Once you\u2019ve made the larger mistake of thinking you must slavishly translate every one of a couple hundred <em>qu\u00e6sumus\u2019<\/em>es, having two or three too many or two few doesn\u2019t much matter.<\/p>\n<p>The issue is whether the missal\u2019s translation theory works (it doesn\u2019t), not whether this missal translation would be improved by getting all the details of Latin grammar right (it wouldn\u2019t).<\/p>\n<p>And if this missal&#8217;s translation theory doesn&#8217;t work, other issues follow. Such as this: what was the reason again for rejecting the 1998 translation? That it didn&#8217;t follow the Latin slavishly and took too many liberties? Hello? \u00a0If a text like the current one can be approved, there&#8217;s little reason left to critique 1998 . On this point, the Holy See has pulled the rug out from under itself .<\/p>\n<p>But as I was saying, the whole <em>qu\u00e6sumus<\/em> thing doesn&#8217;t really matter. Still, I sure am curious. Why did they get the details of basic Latin so wrong? Who did it, and why? Who thought it would be better to insert things not in the Latin, or delete things that are there?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s always dangerous to impute motives, so I\u2019m trying to resist. Maybe it was incompetence, or maybe it was sloppy inattention to detail, or maybe it was a perverse sense of humor, or maybe it was part of a larger well-intentioned plan to make any necessary change to improve the text, or maybe it was a part of a plan to advance someone\u2019s career by pleasing a variety of perceived wishes, or maybe it was the base desire to mess things up just because one <em>could<\/em> \u2013 but I don\u2019t know that it was any of these. I honestly have no idea why such bizarre changes, even about things that don\u2019t much matter, were made to our missal text.<\/p>\n<p>But we may never find out.\u00a0So it is. Sure would be nice to know. Sure would be helpful to the Church, and to the next round of translations, to know.
