Msgr. Bruce Harbert was Executive Director of the International Commission on English in the Liturgy from 2002 to 2009.<\/em><\/p>\n

In the new version of the Collect for the Immaculate Conception we pray that \u2018we, too, may be cleansed . . .\u2019. \u2018Too\u2019 implies a comparison with the Blessed Virgin, of whom we say earlier in the prayer \u2018you preserved her from every stain\u2019. But if she was preserved from every stain, as the Faith teaches, she could not have been cleansed – there was nothing to cleanse her from. The Latin doesn\u2019t say \u2018cleansed\u2019 but rather \u2018mundos,\u2019 which means \u2018pure.\u2019 Like Mary, we can be pure by God\u2019s gift, but, unlike her, we need to be cleansed. So a more faithful translation of the clause in question would run \u2018we, too, may be pure\u2019.<\/p>\n

The prayer could be further improved by replacing \u2018too\u2019 by \u2018also,’ since \u2018we, too\u2019 can be misheard as \u2018we two\u2019. The commas introduced in an attempt to exclude that ambiguity give the text a clumsy and cluttered appearance.<\/p>\n

O God,
\n<\/strong>who by the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
\n<\/strong>prepared a worthy dwelling for your Son,
\ngrant, we pray,
\nthat, as you preserved her from every stain
\nby virtue of the Death of your Son, which you foresaw,
\nso, through her intercession,
