I find myself intrigued by the rich rituals that have emerged to mourn the loss of\u00a0Steve Jobs,\u00a0the\u00a0cultural icon of our media-savvy, technology-driven times.\u00a0 Most intriguing for me where the images of people gathering in mourning who\u00a0held\u00a0up a single lit candle, on their iPads<\/em>.\u00a0 It is such a strikingly congruent marker\u00a0to\u00a0how\u00a0Steve Jobs has changed deeply embedded practices of everyday life —\u00a0including those of mourning and of faith.<\/p>\n

And yet I wondered, as I prayed this morning and commended his soul to God:\u00a0 what ultimately matters in life and in death?\u00a0 What practices would I want my own dying to yield? \u00a0I decided to\u00a0settle for some real\u00a0candles being lit, and\u00a0liturgy being celebrated, and\u00a0works of mercy being done, in my memory. \u00a0At the same time, if someone where to contemplate a candle on their iPad and breathe a prayer for me — why not?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
