Ed. Note: Fr. Joseph Komonchak, retired professor of the Catholic University of America and priest of the Archdiocese of New York, recently shared his collection of limericks composed at and about the Second Vatican Council a<\/em>t Commonweal’s blog<\/a><\/em>. These limericks shed light on many of the weighty issues considered at the Council. For example, retirement age for bishops:<\/em><\/p>\n

To force an ancient bishop to resign
\nIs considered by the Council not benign;
\nOnly secular planners
\nWith no Christian manners
\nWould a churchman to oblivion assign.<\/p>\n

Or the role of a deacon:<\/em><\/p>\n

We all admit that the deacon
\nCould shine in the Church like a beacon.
\n\u201cBut…with a celibate\u2019s vows,
\nOr as a man with a spouse?\u201d
\nIs the question whose answer we\u2019re seekin’.<\/p>\n

Or the preponderance of saints from a very few countries: <\/em><\/p>\n

It\u2019s reported that three Latin nations
\nHave monopolised canonisations.
\nIt seems rather quaint
\nThat a non-Latin saint
\nGet a halo, but with limitations.<\/p>\n

Or even: what was it like to be at the Council?<\/em><\/p>\n

We are two thousand Patres in Session
\nWho feel a great weight of oppression
\nWhat with Cardinals talking
\nAnd lesser lights squawking,
\nThank goodness, the bar\u2019s so refreshin’.<\/p>\n
