Lex orandi lex credendi<\/em>, the slogan goes. The law of prayer is the law of faith. The way we pray determines what we believe. Liturgy comes before doctrine.<\/p>\n

Here in Collegeville we\u2019ve long supported the vernacular. Already in 1951 we renamed Orate Fratres<\/em>, our liturgical journal, Worship<\/em>. And now we\u2019d like to think that we\u2019ve provided a translation of Lex orandi lex credendi<\/em> for our times: yup, \u201cPray Tell.\u201d Now that\u2019s dynamic equivalence at work for you.<\/p>\n

OK, I made all that up. But I do rather like putting \u201cpray\u201d before \u201ctell.\u201d It reminds me of Prologue <\/em>of the Rule of Benedict<\/em>, \u201cEvery time you begin a good work, you must pray to Christ the Lord most earnestly to bring it to perfection.\u201d I try to follow that advice before I post, as I pray for wisdom and a loving heart in putting down my thoughts.<\/p>\n

I rather like running a blog, by the way. It\u2019s the perfect medium for an introvert with lots of opinions like me.<\/p>\n

And I really like the name of our blog. I wish I could claim credit for thinking of it, but I can\u2019t. Kudos to Peter Dwyer, director of Liturgical Press.<\/p>\n
