{"id":11131,"date":"2011-08-20T07:49:57","date_gmt":"2011-08-20T12:49:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=11131"},"modified":"2011-08-20T16:27:51","modified_gmt":"2011-08-20T21:27:51","slug":"august-20-st-bernard-bees-and-bodies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2011\/08\/20\/august-20-st-bernard-bees-and-bodies\/","title":{"rendered":"August 20: St. Bernard, Bees, and Bodies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I may not be the greatest fan ever of this twelfth-century Cistercian abbot and\u00a0<em>doctor ecclesiae, <\/em>but two facets\u00a0of devotional life\u00a0related to him today made me smile.<\/p>\n<p>The first is that Saint Bernard is the patron saint of bees, beekeepers, and candle-makers &#8212; all of which play an important role in Christian liturgy since the earliest centuries (more on this in another post).<\/p>\n<p>Second, I remembered something Peter Phan wrote in his introduction to <em>The Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy<\/em> (Liturgical Press, 2005)<em> <\/em>about the twelfth-century\u00a0Cistercian churches: &#8220;whose geometric proportions are so perfect that a pin dropped in the nave produces a full set of harmonic overtones.\u00a0 The medieval monks who\u00a0sang in those whitewashed churches\u00a0may have suppressed <em>visual <\/em>stimulation, but they developed an almost lascivious capacity for <em>acoustic <\/em>stimulation.\u00a0 Each time they chanted the Divine Office in such spaces, their bodies were massaged by the building&#8217;s vibrations. As the monks chanted the liturgy, their church&#8217;s\u00a0acoustics\u00a0paid devotional homage to their bodies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So, on this feast day of St. Bernard of Clairvaux, I give thanks for the reminder that Catholic liturgy\u00a0needs both\u00a0bees and bodies. \u00a0And may both always flourish,\u00a0in God&#8217;s house (cf.
