{"id":10806,"date":"2011-08-05T12:19:15","date_gmt":"2011-08-05T17:19:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=10806"},"modified":"2013-06-11T10:52:16","modified_gmt":"2013-06-11T16:52:16","slug":"translation-truths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2011\/08\/05\/translation-truths\/","title":{"rendered":"Translation Truths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rob Mickens at <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetablet.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Tablet<\/a><\/em> is telling the truth about the \u00a0translation saga, and his three-part <em>Tablet <\/em>series is fantastic:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cUnlocking the door of the vernacular\u201d (June 18);<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHow Rome moved the goal posts\u201d (June 25);<\/li>\n<li>\u201cA war of words\u201d (July 2).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With the kind permission of our <em>Tablet <\/em>friends, <em>Pray Tell<\/em> is happy to reprint part three, \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/War-of-Words-Mickens-July-21.pdf\">&#8220;A War of Words.&#8221;<\/a> The conclusion is a zinger:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The real shock came in November 2010 when a scathing report, written anonymously, produced extensive evidence that last-minute changes had been made to the English Missal without the knowledge or approval of the competent conferences and in violation of the Vatican\u2019s own translation rules\u2026<\/p>\n<p>So it was a bitter irony that the officials of the revamped ICEL should also be fed a poison similar to the one they had dished out to the predecessors. They believed their Missal, which had been given the Vatican\u2019s <em>recognitio<\/em>, was a done deal, only to discover that Vox Clara and\/or the CDW had revised it. The cardinal said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Don\u2019t believe newspaper reports telling you that there was no consultation, that it was all imposed from Rome or the like. It\u2019s total nonsense\u2026 This is a text prepared and then improved by virtually all the bishops sharing our common English language.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Cardinal Pell said that complaints are based on ideological or even sub-theological objections and that the criticisms are ignorant of translation and not based on linguistic arguments.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p>St. John\u2019s School of Theology\u2022Seminary\u00a0 is just wrapping up the huge \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www1.csbsju.edu\/sot\/symposium\/default.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Lay Ecclesial Ministry<\/a>\u201d symposium, <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.csbsju.edu\/sot\/symposium\/2011CollegevilleSymposiumCoSponsors.htm\" target=\"_blank\">co-sponsored<\/a> by offices of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, universities, ministry organizations, and dioceses across the U.S. Hundreds of participants including several bishops. One bishop sought me out to tell me something. It was this: he wanted to acknowledge \u00a0that the missal translation process was flawed, that Roman was heavy-handed and made serious mistake in the final text. He&#8217;s grateful for the work all of us did, however it turned out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p>Did you know that the medieval Averro\u00efsts held a <a href=\"http:\/\/maritain.nd.edu\/jmc\/etext\/homp339.htm\">Theory of Two Truths<\/a>?
