{"id":10234,"date":"2011-06-26T15:12:39","date_gmt":"2011-06-26T20:12:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=10234"},"modified":"2011-06-28T16:09:29","modified_gmt":"2011-06-28T21:09:29","slug":"a-few-missal-roll-out-anecdotes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2011\/06\/26\/a-few-missal-roll-out-anecdotes\/","title":{"rendered":"A few missal roll-out anecdotes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>* A priest on one continent, citing Canon Alan Griffiths (the ICEL translator fired for his honesty) that the coming translation as amended by <em>Vox Clara<\/em> is so flawed that it will need to be reissued in revised form in the near future, wrote this to his bishop: \u201cI feel I cannot in conscience allow the people of God here, or anyone else, to fork out such large sums for what will apparently be a temporary stop-gap book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>* A <em>Pray Tell<\/em> reader on another continent sent to the bishop our post on the <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2011\/06\/18\/whoops-heresy-in-that-%e2%80%9cyour%e2%80%9d-the-collect-for-trinity\/\" target=\"_blank\">heretical collect for Trinity Sunday<\/a>. The\u00a0 bishop replied with a kind thank-you and agreed with the writer that he is not quite sure what the purpose of <em>Vox Clara<\/em> is. But perhaps <em>Vox<\/em> is not the cause of some of the final changes \u2013 the bishop heard that the Congregation for Divine Worship made the changes, and one does not know the quality of their English. Ending on a note of encouragement, the bishop assured the writer that we\u2019ll get through this.<\/p>\n<p>* You thought \u201cChrist has died\u201d has died, since it\u2019s no longer an approved acclamation in the new missal? Not quite. That acclamation is still part of the Eucharistic Prayers for Children. And because the Eucharistic Prayers for Children are not in the Latin missal \u2013 because you wouldn\u2019t use them in Latin with children, and because they couldn\u2019t include the English versions in our missal because they aren\u2019t in the Latin missal and the English missal must mimic the contents of the Latin missal \u2013 though you <em>would<\/em> do them in English with children \u2013 are you following the logic of this? I\u2019m not either \u2013 it means that the currently legal translation of the Eucharistic Prayers for Children is the unrevised one. No, we don\u2019t advise using the children\u2019s prayers at Sunday Mass just to keep the acclamation. For all that, I would think that any new translation would still be \u201cChrist has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again\u201d \u2013that\u2019s what the Latin says.<\/p>\n<p>* At Mass, as we all know, the new response is \u201cAnd with your spirit.\u201d But at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccbpublishing.org\/productdetails.cfm?PC=737\" target=\"_blank\">SCAP<\/a>, Baptism, Anointing, all the other rites and sacraments? \u201cAnd also with you\u201d \u2013 since those translations haven\u2019t been revised yet. This will work fine, I think, as long as the laity are all keeping track of when the Congregation for Divine Worship in Rome grants <em>recognitio<\/em> to each revised translation, so as to give their appropriate liturgical response.
