{"id":10180,"date":"2011-06-22T10:31:34","date_gmt":"2011-06-22T15:31:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=10180"},"modified":"2011-06-28T16:27:11","modified_gmt":"2011-06-28T21:27:11","slug":"whats-behind-the-door","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2011\/06\/22\/whats-behind-the-door\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s Behind the Door?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our Rita Ferrone has a post at <em>Commonweal<\/em>, \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.commonwealmagazine.org\/blog\/?p=14005\" target=\"_blank\">What\u2019s Behind the Door<\/a><\/span>,\u201d \u00a0based on Rob Mickens\u2019 recent piece in <em>The Tablet<\/em>, on the procedural (ecclesiological) problems in the new translation. Go check it out at <em>Commonweal<\/em> and join the conversation there.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Tablet<\/em> piece requires subscription so I won\u2019t comment further on it, except to lift a few choice quotations used by Mickens. Here\u2019s Paul VI in 1969: \u201cFrom now on the vernacular, not Latin, will be the principal language of the Mass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And do you know who it was who spoke of \u201cdecentralization of the liturgical decision-making\u201d and called it a \u201cfundamental innovation?\u201d And wrote, \u201cThe formulation of liturgical laws for their own region is now, within limits, the responsibility of the various conferences of bishops. And this is not by delegation from the Holy See, but by virtue of their own independent authority\u201d? And this: \u201cPerhaps one could say that this small paragraph [ed. <em>SC <\/em>36], which for the first time assigns to the conferences of bishops their own canonical authority, has more significance for the theology of the episcopacy and for the long desired strengthening of episcopal power than anything in the Constitution on the Church, <em>Lumen Gentium<\/em>, itself\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Yup. Fr. Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI. How times change. It is on his watch that the retranslated English Missal was approved \u2013 by a central office which arrogated all authority to itself and rolled over bishops\u2019 conferences. Oh well.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, I can\u2019t resist. Here\u2019s a bit more. The same issue of <em>The Tablet<\/em> has a piece by Alan Griffiths on the problems in the new translation of the Easter prefaces. Did you know that <em>profusis<\/em> is mistranslated in every one of them? And <em>praedicare<\/em>? Oh well, these Prefaces are used only for 50 days, and it\u2019s only Easter season.<\/p>\n<p>Griffiths concludes: \u201cIt could be argued that this translation makes a caricature of the text. It is hardly the faithful translation insisted on in <em>Liturgiam authenticam<\/em>.
