From Death to Life: Holy Week Liturgy (part 2)

By Editor, March 24, 2026

Prepare for Holy Week with liturgical theology and history! In this two-part series, originally offered at The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Fr. Marco Benini offers us an opportunity to prepare for the liturgies of Holy Week.

In part 2, experienced teacher and scholar Fr. Benini reflects on the liturgy of Easter Vigil, drawing on art and architecture as he connects liturgical history and theological meaning (along with a few funny stories [if you’re the kind of person who finds liturgical history lore amusing]!).

This lecture is posted with permission of the Basilica of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D.C. It was first delivered in March 2025.

Fr. Marco Benini serves as ordinary professor for liturgical studies at the Theologische Fakultรคt Trier, the head of the academic department of the German Liturgical Institute (Deutsches Liturgishes Institut) in Trier, and as research professor at The Catholic University of America. His most recent pastoral work, Were Not our Hearts Burning? Understanding the Mass–Living the Eucharist, was published with Paulist Press in 2026.
