United Methodist Church overturns prohibitions on gay clergy

In a vote held on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, the United Methodist Church General Conference meeting moved to remove its ban on gay clergy.  According to the New York Times, the “40-year-old ban on ‘self-avowed practicing homosexuals’ passed overwhelmingly and without debate in a package of measures that had already received strong support at the committee level.”

The removal reverses policies established at the 2019 General Conference, which included bans on gay clergy and same-sex marriage.  A vote on same-sex weddings in the United Methodist Church is also scheduled to take place at this year’s meeting.
