It is published by the Order of Saint Luke, a dispersed ecumenical religious order founded by Methodists. โ€œThe one who sings prays twice.โ€ Even though the attribution to Augustine is dubious, the oft quoted saying resonates with my experience of musicโ€™s ability to let me experience Godโ€™s real presence in worship. In this article, I propose a corollary; when one moves oneโ€™s body symbolically in union with spiritual song, their prayer is magnified threefold.

Throwback Theology: The Apostolic Tradition

The Apostolic Tradition, or the Traditio Apostolica, was once believed to have been written by a certain Hippolytus of Rome, but is now thought by many to be a composite work, representing the work of multiple authors and communities. It is an ancient Christian text that offers insight into some early liturgical practices and provides instruction to early Christians. Although the exact date of the composition of the text is unclear, many believe significant portions of it were composed during the second and third centuries AD. This particular excerpt focuses on the practice of prayer. It emphasizes that prayer is an essential spiritual discipline for strengthening oneโ€™s faith, resisting temptation, and drawing closer to Christ. The following is an excerpt from the Project Gutenberg eBook of The Apostolic Tradition of Hippolytus, translated into English with introduction and explanatory notes by Burton Scott Easton.
