RIP Arlo Dean Duba (1929-2023)

Leading Presbyterian liturgist Arlo Dean Duba passed away on June 27, 2023 at the age of 93. He is survived by his wife Doreen and his four children and seven grandchildren.

Duba was ordained a Presbyterian minister in 1955. He completed his divinity degree at Princeton Theological Seminary, as well as a PhD there on the nature of theological languages. He was chaplain and associate professor of religion at Westminster Choir College. He did post-doctoral research at the Institut Liturgique in Paris. In 1969, he returned to Princeton Theological Seminary as director of daily chapel worship and lecturer in worship and liturgical studies. In 1982 he was called to be professor of worship and dean at the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary.

Duba was active in the North American Academy of Liturgy, of which he was a founding member; Societas Liturgica; and the Association for Reformed and Liturgical Worship.

Duba served on the Psalter Committees of both the United Methodist and the United Presbyterian Churches, and was the Presbyterian observer/participant on the Rejoice in the Lord Committee of the Reformed Church in America.

    It was a pleasure to get to know Arlo and Doreen when they lived in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He was a master gardener and loved to unite with God in his care for creation. I’ve missed them since they moved away and look forward to our reunion in the presence of a gracious and everlasting God.
