Five Years Ago Today, Pope Benedict Ended His Term

Five years ago today, February 28, 2013, was a very unique and emotional day in the history of the Roman Catholic Church – the day Pope Benedict XVI ended his term.

At Whispers in the Loggia, Rocco has an well-done recap of the historic day, including videos.

On the day Pope Benedict announced his resignation on February 11, 2013, a bolt of lightning struck St. Peter’s Basilica. BBC reported that the odds of this happening were actually quite high. The Vatican press office stated that it was “not currently attributing” the event to divine intervention.
