An intentional and wonderful coincidence that dates back to the first century: The introit on the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross is the same as on Holy Thursday. That reminds us that Holy Thursday is – among other aspects – the eve and beginning of Good Friday.
The history of this feast is deeply connected to the historical triumph of Christianity in the Constantinian Roman Empire. So many leaders have used the Cross as a sign of moral and political authority, and many continue to do so today. But those who listen to today’s New Testament reading Phil 2:6–11 cannot ignore that Christ’s authority does not root in human power, but in humility.
