Cardinal Parolin: Slight Opening on Optional Celibacy?

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, chosen by Pope Francis to be his Secretary of State, delivered the keynote address this morning at a conference on clerical celibacy inย Rome. Radio Vatican reports:

In his prepared remarks, the Cardinal Secretary of State recalled that the requirement of celibacy is a disciplinary one that has never been imposed by the whole Church, and one from which men have more or less frequently been dispensed.

Cardinal Parolin addressed the opinion that it is time to lift the discipline in the Latin Church, where it is mandatory for all priests, and not just bishops and religious. โ€œIf the problematic [situation of a so-called โ€˜vocations crisisโ€™] does not appear irrelevant,โ€ he said, โ€œit is nevertheless necessary not to take rushed decisions, or decisions based solely on the basis of present need.โ€

Cardinal Parolin went on to say, โ€œIt remains true now as ever that the exigencies of evangelization, together with the history and multiform tradition of the Church, leave open the possibility for legitimate debate, if these are motivated by the [imperative of] Gospel proclamation and conducted in a constructive way, [and] safeguarding the beauty and high dignity of the choice for celibate life.โ€

    Buried in this little chink in the armor of celibacy lies what, I believe, is the most serious problem the Vatican would consider should the discipline be relaxed: In addition to religious obviously being celibate, so would bishops have to be — a la their Orthodox counterparts. I find it highly unlikely that Rome would automatically shrink its (already shrunk) pool of episcopal candidate to the (also shrunken) ranks of the religious orders. What ever would happen to all those diocesan climbers who populate the NAC should their ambitions be short-circuited? On second thought, Rome would always have an ample supply of gay priests from which to choose their mitred clergy, now wouldn’t they? Ah yes, plus รงa change, plus c’est la meme chose!

      @Rev. Richard Middleton:
      Why would a comment such as this be allowed on this site? This adds nothing to the discussion of celibate priesthood vs. married clergy, and only perpetuates both an attack on NAC trained priests, most of whom are good men, and the notion that gay priests are the only men who would possibly choose to be celibate. As a celibate priest myself, who was not trained at the NAC, this post seems offensive, even if it was meant tongue in cheek.
