Every February 2nd the Church celebrates the Presentation of the Lord. This feast marks Christโs presentation in the temple. Following Mosaic law, Mary took Christ to the temple to be redeemed 40 days after his birth. There Christ was greeted by Simeon and Anna. From Simeonโs blessing of Christ we get the Nunc dimittis. This canticle is used in some Lutheran churches as a hymn after communion. In the Roman tradition, it made its way into Compline.
Historically the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord has also been known as Candlemas. On this day, candles were blessed. While this tradition is more a European than an American one, I am curious to know how people celebrate the feast.
Do you bless your churchโs candles? Do you process with lit candles? How does your community celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord?
