Hot off the Press! Yet Another Book Giveaway

Yves Congar My Journal of the CouncilThis week, the third and final (for the time being) book giveaway.ย  Weโ€™ve been happy to see such a positive response to the two previous opportunities.

This time weโ€™re giving away five copies of Yves Congarโ€™s My Journal of the Council (excerpt here).

Congar was, of course, one of the most active and influential theologians at the Second Vatican Council. Knowing that he was playing a role in an historic event, Congar began keeping careful notes from the very beginning of his involvement and continued until the Councilโ€™s close.ย  But these notes are far from a simple catalog of people and dates โ€“ they offer fascinating insights into the behind-the-scenes machinations of the Council and are full of very personal, even emotional, observations.ย  (See the review that appeared recently at National Review Online here.)

Because of the very personal nature of this journal, Congar insisted it be embargoed from any publication until the year 2000. It appeared in French in 2002, but only now is it available in English.

Joseph Komanchak calls this work โ€œindispensable reading for anyone who wishes to understand the texts, and the drama, of Vatican IIโ€ and Mary Catherine Hilkert, OP, has noted that โ€œthis volume provides a rare glimpse into the personal and spiritual cost of Congarโ€™s love of truth and his commitment to hand on the Churchโ€™s authentic Tradition as a living heritage of faith.”

Enter to win a copy of the book by filling out the form below. Entries must be submitted by 4 PM CST Friday, June 8, 2012.

Winners will be announced on Pray Tell.

  1. I recently acquired a copy of “The Council, Reform, and Reunion” by Hans Kung. Looking forward to reading it…

Knowing my luck I thought “I’m not going to win this – how much does it cost?” And so I looked it up on the Mazon UK site – apparently over ยฃ70!

Surely not? How fortunate are those who can put this on their “Necessary Expenses” account.

  3. I was looking at that book online recently and thinking about how much I longed for a copy.

I remember buying Father Kung’s book when it came out. It wasn’t cheap then. I don’t recall what I paid for it.

  5. Brent McWilliams

I wish I had known about this give away before I ordered the
book. It is a fascinating read. I won a copy of Rausch’s
Eschatology, Liturgy and Christology in the last give away
and have found it to be a great read. Thanks for your generosity.
